Chapter 8 - The Arraignment and the Ironclad Ledger

The arraignment courtroom was packed to the gills.

In the center of the defendant's table sat Ethan Vance, flanked by two high-priced defense attorneys who looked as though they had just realized they were defending the sinking Titanic with a teaspoon.

Ethan’s tailored suit was wrinkled, his hair uncombed, and the arrogant sheen of corporate power that had once defined his presence was entirely gone, replaced by a gray, haunted exhaustion.

When the heavy oak doors swung open and I walked down the center aisle leaning on my cane, accompanied by Detective Miller and a federal prosecutor, Ethan’s head snapped up.

Our eyes met across the courtroom.

For a fraction of a second, a flash of pure, unadulterated hatred crossed his features—followed instantly by a crushing wave of defeat as he realized there was no escape, no lifeline, and no one coming to save him.

"All rise for the Honorable Judge Harrison," the bailiff announced loudly.

The entire gallery stood as Judge Harrison entered the chamber, his expression stern and unyielding as he seated himself behind the high mahogany bench.

"Be seated," Judge Harrison commanded, adjusting his glasses before opening the thick case file resting before him. "We are here for the formal arraignment of state versus Ethan Vance on multiple counts of wire fraud, grand larceny, embezzlement of municipal funds, tampering with critical vehicle safety systems, and attempted premeditated murder."

The federal prosecutor stepped up to the podium, opening a leather portfolio filled with pristine, color-coded financial audits and forensic reports.

"Your Honor, the state presents a comprehensive digital and physical audit trail," the prosecutor began, his voice ringing clearly across the silent courtroom. "The defendant, operating under the corporate guise of Vance Properties LLC, systematically siphoned two point eight million dollars from a federal housing grant, routing the capital through four distinct shell companies before laundering the funds into private overseas accounts."

He slid a secondary set of documents across the clerk’s desk toward the judge.

"Furthermore, forensic reconstruction of the defendant's personal vehicle—a 2022 SUV registered in the defendant's name—reveals conclusive chemical and mechanical evidence that the hydraulic brake lines were deliberately compromised using industrial solvent designed to induce total braking failure under highway pressure conditions."

Judge Harrison’s eyes scanned the forensic report, his brow furrowing deeper with every page. He then looked up, fixing his gaze directly upon Ethan Vance.

"How does the defendant plead to all counts?" the judge asked coldly.

Ethan’s lead defense attorney stood up hastily, clearing his throat. "Your Honor, given the complex nature of the financial restructuring and the ongoing medical circumstances surrounding—"

"I asked the defendant how he pleads," Judge Harrison interrupted, his tone dropping an octave into a dangerous, commanding register. "Not your attorney, Mr. Davis. The defendant."

Ethan slowly pushed himself up from his chair, his hands trembling as he gripped the edge of the defense table for support.

He looked across the room one last time, his gaze locking onto mine where I sat quietly in the front row.

"Guilty, Your Honor," Ethan whispered, his voice cracking into a dry, hollow rasp that barely carried across the quiet chamber. "I plead... guilty to all charges."

A low murmur rippled through the gallery like wind blowing through dry brush.

Judge Harrison banged his gavel once, a sharp, decisive crack that echoed off the high vaulted ceiling.

"Remand the defendant into federal custody without the possibility of bail," the judge ordered instantly. "Sentencing hearing is scheduled for thirty days from today. Court is adjourned."
