Chapter 14 - The Showdown on the Steel Catwalk

Luca held up his hand, freezing the assault team in their tracks beneath the shadow of the cooling conduits.

The air in the switching station was rapidly warming, smelling heavily of pressurized freon and overheating electrical coils.

"Cover the lower access valves," Luca commanded his men in an absolute whisper.

"If she trips the cooling vents, override the emergency bypass manually."

He turned to me, his hands gently framing the sides of my face, his thumbs wiping away drops of rainwater from my cheekbones.

"Stay at the base of the staircase, Grace."

"Luca, she has a remote trigger," I warned, my heart hammering in my ears.

"I know how she thinks," Luca murmured, his gaze holding an unshakeable, profound warmth.

"She won't pull that trigger until she believes she has broken me."

"She will never break you," I said firmly.

Luca turned and stepped onto the open steel staircase, his boots ringing rhythmically against the metal steps as he climbed toward the elevated platform.

I stayed in the shadow of the massive transformer bank, clutching a handheld terminal I had unplugged from the lower diagnostic port with my left hand.

On the upper catwalk thirty feet above the concrete floor, Vanessa stood beside the central console, dressed in a black leather trench coat stained with soot and rain.

Her hair was tangled, her face pale and wild, and in her right hand she gripped a military-grade detonator linked to the gas cooling reservoirs.

Beside her stood two heavily armed mercenaries bearing the insignia of the Detroit syndicate, their rifles aimed directly at Luca’s chest as he reached the landing.

"Drop the weapon, Luca," Vanessa hissed, her eyes gleaming with manic triumph.

Luca lowered his Glock onto the steel grating with slow, deliberate precision and kicked it aside.

"The game is finished, Vanessa," Luca said calmly, standing tall under the harsh fluorescent glare.

"Your father is dead on the highway, your mercenaries at the hospital are in federal custody, and Cavallaro has already abandoned you to protect his territory."

Vanessa flinched at the news of Enzo's death, but her face immediately hardened into an ugly mask of hatred.

"My father was a weak, hesitant fool who let your uncle dictate terms for twenty years!" she screamed, her voice bouncing violently off the steel rafters.

"I was the one who engineered the shipping route acquisitions!"

"I was the one who negotiated the eastern cartel alliance!"

"And you would have handed me half your family's empire on a silver platter if that worthless, gutter-born maid hadn't dropped her fork!"

"Grace Parker has more honor and courage in her broken finger than your entire bloodline ever possessed," Luca replied coldly, stepping one pace closer.

"Don't take another step!" Vanessa shrieked, raising the detonator high.

"I will blow this station, the harbor, and your precious name into ashes!"

"You won't blow anything, Vanessa," I shouted, stepping out from the shadows onto the bottom landing of the catwalk.

Vanessa’s eyes bulged with pure venom as she looked down at me.

"You! You should have starved in the streets where you belong!"

"I already initiated the manual coolant flush from the ground terminal ninety seconds ago," I said, holding up the diagnostic tablet with my uninjured hand.

"The pressure in the cooling tanks dropped to zero two minutes before Luca even reached the stairs."

"Your detonator is connected to empty steel pipes."

Vanessa stared at the detonator in her hand, her manic confidence collapsing into utter panic.

She frantically clicked the red button three times.

Nothing happened.

Only the dull mechanical hiss of empty hydraulic valves echoed through the cavernous hall.

"Kill them both!" Vanessa screamed at the two mercenaries beside her.

Before the mercenaries could bring their rifles to bear, Luca lunged forward with devastating, lethal speed.

He swept the legs of the first gunman, sending him crashing over the steel railing into the concrete floor below with a sickening thud.

The second mercenary attempted to swing his rifle butt into Luca’s ribs, but Luca blocked the blow with his left forearm, seized the man's throat, and drove his skull directly into the iron control console.

The man slumped unconscious against the shattered screens.

Vanessa turned to flee toward the exterior fire escape, but her heel caught on the edge of a severed cable, sending her sprawling face-first onto the grated catwalk.

Luca reached her in two strides, his foot coming down firmly upon her outstretched wrist until the useless detonator clattered away and fell through the metal grating.

Vanessa turned onto her back, panting, bleeding from a cut on her forehead, her aristocratic facade entirely obliterated.

She looked up at Luca, terrified, then turned her desperate gaze toward me as I slowly climbed the stairs to the upper landing.

"Grace... please," Vanessa whimpered, her voice cracking into pathetic desperation.

"You know what it's like to have nothing... to fight for everything..."

I stopped two feet away from her, looking down at the woman who had brutally crushed my bones under a grand piano lid without a shred of remorse.

"You didn't fight for anything, Vanessa," I said, my voice steady, cold, and clear.

"You took from everyone around you until there was nothing left to steal."

Luca looked down at me, then at the fallen woman at our feet.

"Marco," Luca spoke into his radio without taking his eyes off Vanessa.

"Call the federal marshals."

"Tell them we have the primary architect of Julianna Rossi's kidnapping ready for processing."
