Chapter 3 - The Council at the Banquet Table

"I want that girl removed from the North Side docks before she talks to the federal grand jury."

Luca's synthesized voice echoed through every chandelier-lit corridor of the two-story mansion with chilling clarity.

In the banquet hall below, the sound of dropped champagne flutes shattering against the marble floor echoed up the grand staircase.

Luca didn't waste a second.

He unbuttoned his suit jacket, reached beneath his left arm, and checked the slide of his concealed Glock 19 with a practiced click.

"Stay behind me, Grace," he ordered, his voice steady as an iron beam.

"If anyone raises a weapon, drop flat against the floor and crawl into the pantry corridor."

"Mr. Moretti, they will think you killed her," I cried, following him down the carpeted hallway as fast as my trembling legs could carry me.

"They will think what I tell them to think," he said without looking back.

We reached the top of the grand marble staircase just as the banquet hall descended into deafening chaos.

Men in tailored Italian suits were standing up from their chairs, their hands instinctively reaching inside their jackets.

At the far end of the room stood Don Salvatore Moretti, Luca’s seventy-year-old uncle and the reigning patriarch of the family council.

Salvatore’s weathered face was twisted in disbelief, his white hair gleaming under the chandelier as his fist slammed onto the table.

Standing next to the soundboard near the ballroom entrance was Vanessa's father, Enzo Bellini.

Enzo had a cigar clamped between his yellowing teeth, his cruel eyes gleaming with triumph.

Vanessa stood beside her father, holding a crystal glass of champagne in one hand and a gold-plated microphone in the other.

Her red dress looked like a splash of fresh arterial blood against the white floral decorations.

"As you can all hear," Vanessa proclaimed into the microphone, feigning profound sorrow, "Luca has compromised our entire operation."

"He had poor Julianna Rossi silenced because she discovered his private side-deals with the eastern cartel."

"He planned to use our marriage as a legal shield to drag the Bellini name into his federal indictment!"

"That is an interesting fairy tale, Vanessa."

Luca’s voice didn't need a microphone to cut through the uproar.

He descended the marble stairs with deliberate, terrifying grace, each step measured and cold.

The guests turned as one, parting like the sea before a storm as Luca reached the polished floor of the banquet hall.

I hovered at the base of the staircase, my injured arm tucked securely against my chest, feeling the hostile gaze of thirty mobsters.

Don Salvatore stepped forward, his heavy gold signet ring catching the light.

"Luca! What is the meaning of this broadcast? Is that your voice confirming Julianna’s hit?"

Luca stopped five paces from his uncle and looked directly into Enzo Bellini’s smug face.

"It is my voice, Uncle. Spliced together from sixteen wiretapped phone calls I made over the last eight months."

Vanessa scoffed, taking a dramatic step forward while dabbing imaginary tears from her eyes.

"He is lying to save his skin! The audio file was delivered to my private email an hour ago by an anonymous informant!"

"You didn't receive it by email, Vanessa," I spoke up, my voice trembling but clear enough to slice through the murmurs.

Every head in the room snapped toward me.

Vanessa’s aristocratic veneer cracked for a fraction of a second, pure, unadulterated venom flashing in her green eyes.

"Silence that clumsy maid!" Enzo Bellini barked, gesturing toward two of his armed bodyguards near the buffet. "This is family business!"

"Touch her, and neither of you leaves this room alive," Luca warned, his hand resting casually inside his jacket pocket.

The two Bellini enforcers froze instantly, knowing that Luca's personal security detail stationed along the perimeter had their weapons drawn beneath their coats.

Luca turned to the room, pointing toward my splinted hand.

"At four o'clock today, Miss Parker walked past the music room and saw Vanessa sitting at the grand piano with an editing workstation."

"When Grace realized what was happening, Vanessa slammed the brass-hinged piano lid down on her right hand to prevent her from calling security."

Murmurs of confusion and disgust rippled through the older wives seated at the council table.

"That is absurd!" Vanessa shrieked, her voice losing its composed melody. "She is a broke domestic worker looking for a settlement payout!"

"Then explain this, Vanessa," Luca said, pulling my cracked smartphone from his pocket and tossing it directly into the center of the table.

The phone slid across the white tablecloth, stopping right next to Don Salvatore’s untouched wine glass.

"Play the recording from three hours ago, Uncle," Luca instructed calmly.

Don Salvatore frowned, picked up the phone with his calloused hands, and pressed the play button on the screen.

The sitting room fell into a tomb-like silence as Vanessa’s genuine, unedited voice blasted from the speaker:

"Perfect. Once Don Salvatore and the commission hear this, Luca will be facing twenty-five years for Julianna Rossi’s murder unless my father buys off the judge."

Enzo Bellini’s cigar dropped from his lips, hitting the Persian rug with a shower of orange sparks.

Vanessa’s face drained of every ounce of color, turning as white as the lilies banked against the walls.

Don Salvatore slowly raised his head, his ancient eyes burning with absolute, deadly fury.

"You tried to frame my nephew for a capital crime on Moretti soil?" Salvatore whispered, his voice trembling with age and venom.

"Father, she fabricated that! The maid faked it with an app!" Vanessa screamed, backing toward her father.

"The maid cannot afford an orthopedic doctor, let alone advanced audio manipulation software," Luca stated, stepping directly into Enzo’s personal space.

"Where is Julianna Rossi, Enzo?"

Enzo’s right hand twitched toward his waistband, but before his fingers could even graze leather, Luca moved like a striking viper.

Luca grabbed Enzo’s wrist, twisted it backward until the joint popped with a sickening crunch, and slammed the older man face-first onto the banquet table.

Silverware flew through the air, wine glasses shattered, and the women shrieked as Luca pressed his Glock barrel against the base of Enzo's skull.

"I asked you a question, Bellini," Luca whispered against the mobster's ear.

"Where did you bury Julianna Rossi?"
