Chapter 8 - The Confession in the Packing Basement

The heavy oak doors of the packing plant swung open with a muffled groan of rusted hinges.

Inside, the air smelled heavily of salt, damp concrete, and old fish scales.

Dim yellow work-lights flickered from the ceiling rafters, casting long, menacing shadows across the empty processing floor.

Luca held his weapon raised, his boots making no sound against the damp concrete as he swept the perimeter.

I stayed two steps behind him, my eyes scanning the dark corners for any sign of movement.

From somewhere beneath our feet came the muffled sound of a metallic door rattling and a frightened voice crying out.

“Down the service stairs,” Luca whispered, pointing toward a rusted steel staircase tucked behind an industrial ice machine.

We descended into the sub-level basement, where the temperature dropped sharply and frost coated the exposed water pipes.

At the end of the narrow corridor stood a reinforced steel security door with an electronic keypad lock.

Two Bellini enforcers stood guard outside the door, smoking cigarettes and laughing quietly.

Before they even realized we were standing at the top of the corridor, Luca raised his silenced Glock and fired twice with absolute, lethal precision.

Both men dropped instantly without a single sound, hitting the concrete floor in a heap.

Luca sprinted down the hallway, punched the override button on the keypad, and kicked the heavy steel door open.

Inside the dimly lit holding room sat a young woman with long dark hair, huddled beneath a gray wool blanket on a metal cot.

She looked up in sheer terror as the door flew open, shielding her eyes from the sudden glare of the hallway light.

“Please… don’t hurt me anymore,” she sobbed, her voice cracking with exhaustion.

“Julianna?” Luca asked, lowering his weapon and stepping slowly into the room.

The girl froze, blinking up at his face in absolute disbelief.

“Luca… Mr. Moretti?” she whispered, scrambling off the cot and running toward him.

“Are you alright?” Luca asked gently, placing a steady hand on her shoulder.

“They said you ordered the hit… they said you were going to kill me if I told the police about my father’s shipments,” Julianna cried, burying her face in his jacket.

“It was Enzo and Vanessa,” I said softly from the doorway.

Julianna pulled back, looking at me with wide, tear-filled eyes.

“Who are you?”

“My name is Grace Parker,” I answered, offering a small, reassuring smile.

“I work at the Moretti estate, and I helped your boss find you.”

Julianna grabbed my left hand, squeezing it tightly with overwhelming gratitude.

“Thank you… thank you so much. They kept me locked in here for three weeks without knowing if anyone was looking for me.”

“You’re safe now, Julianna,” Luca promised, turning toward the doorway as Marco jogged down the stairs.

“Boss, we secured the perimeter,” Marco reported, looking at Julianna with relief.

“All of Enzo’s remaining loyalists have been disarmed and zip-tied in the loading bay.”

“Good,” Luca said, pulling his phone from his pocket.
