Chapter 2 - The Spliced Confession

Dr. Russo finished wrapping my splinted fingers in fresh surgical plaster at precisely ten minutes past ten.

He packed his black leather medical bag, looked at me with sympathetic but cautious eyes, and left the third-floor sitting room without asking a single question.

In the Moretti household, survival meant minding your own business and never asking why blood was on the floor.

I sat on the edge of the velvet armchair, shivering despite the warmth radiating from the fireplace.

The door opened with a soft click, and Luca walked in, holding my discarded, blood-stained white serving glove in his hand.

He closed the door behind him and locked the brass deadbolt with a slow turn of his wrist.

"Dr. Russo says your fourth metacarpal is cracked in two places," Luca said, tossing the glove onto the small tea table between us.

I kept my eyes glued to the oriental rug, terrified of what would happen once the party ended downstairs.

"I went to the service pantry on the ground floor three minutes ago, Grace," he continued, pulling up an armchair opposite me.

"The pantry door is mounted on industrial hydraulic hinges that close at four miles per hour with a rubber safety bumper."

My heart slammed against my ribs like a trapped bird.

"It is physically impossible for that door to crush human bone," Luca stated calmly.

"I also checked the security logs at the gate. Mrs. Carter left the property at noon to collect my mother’s vintage veil from the tailor."

He leaned forward, placing his elbows on his knees, his intense gaze trapping mine.

"So Vanessa lied about Mrs. Carter reporting the accident, and you lied to protect yourself from Vanessa."

"Mr. Moretti, please," I pleaded, my voice cracking. "I just need to keep my job. I have nowhere else to go, and I cannot pay my debts without my salary."

"You will keep your job, and your debts are no longer your concern," he said with an unyielding tone.

"Now tell me why the future mistress of this house tried to permanently cripple your right hand at four o'clock today."

I stared at the scarred knuckles of the man whose family controlled half the illicit commerce of the Midwest.

Telling the truth meant stepping directly between two warring criminal syndicates.

Staying silent meant Vanessa would find a way to make me disappear into Lake Michigan before sunrise.

"I heard your voice, Mr. Moretti," I whispered, barely able to hear myself over the wind outside the window.

Luca’s eyes narrowed into slits.

"My voice? I was across town at the union shipyard until six o'clock."

"I know you were," I said, lifting my chin slightly. "That is why I stopped outside the double doors of the music room."

Luca remained motionless, listening to every syllable with predator-like focus.

"The house was empty, but your voice was speaking through the high-end stereo speakers in the corner."

"What was the recording saying?"

"It didn't make sense at first," I explained, reliving the terror of that afternoon. "It was your voice, but the cadence was wrong, like someone was stitching words together with razor blades."

Luca’s jaw tightened. "A voice synthesizer."

"Miss Bellini was sitting on the piano bench with a silver laptop connected to an external hard drive," I continued.

"She had an audio editing timeline open on the screen, cutting tiny waveforms of your past phone conversations."

"She kept replaying one specific sentence, adjusting the pitch until it sounded entirely natural."

Luca stood up slowly, the calm exterior cracking to reveal an abyss of controlled fury.

"What was the sentence, Grace?"

My throat seized up, and I pulled my phone out from the hidden inner pocket of my maid apron with my left hand.

"She caught me when my shadow fell across the mahogany floorboards."

"Before I could run, she slammed the heavy brass-reinforced lid of the grand piano directly onto my fingers."

Luca looked down at my splinted hand, his eyes burning with a terrifying, silent rage.

"She smashed your hand under the piano lid to make you drop your phone," he deduced instantly.

"Yes, sir. But she didn't realize that my voice recorder had been running the entire time I stood by the door."

I placed the cracked smartphone onto the glass table and tapped the screen with my thumb.

The speaker crackled with low static before Luca's voice emerged through the tiny speaker.

The tone was unmistakably his, but the pauses between the words were unnaturally sterile.

"I want that girl... removed from the North Side docks... before she talks to the federal grand jury."

Then the audio shifted, and Vanessa's actual voice cut through the recording, cold and smug.

"Perfect. Once Don Salvatore and the commission hear this, Luca will be facing twenty-five years for Julianna Rossi’s murder unless my father buys off the judge."

The room fell into an icy, suffocating silence.

Luca did not move a muscle, but the veins in his neck were pulsing with violent tension.

Julianna Rossi was the nineteen-year-old daughter of Luca’s chief logistics officer, who had vanished near the docks three weeks prior.

The Chicago police and the federal authorities had been tearing the city apart looking for her, suspecting syndicate foul play.

Vanessa was fabricating an audio confession from Luca to make it appear that he had ordered Julianna’s execution.

With that recording, the Bellini family could blackmail Luca into signing over fifty percent of his territory and forcing him into marriage to secure their silence.

"She has the master file on a flash drive," I whispered, trembling.

Before Luca could speak, the estate's central public address system chimed through the ceiling speakers.

The festive music playing in the banquet hall downstairs suddenly faded out.

Vanessa's melodic voice echoed down the long marble hallways of the mansion, addressing the thirty guests below.

"Honored guests, family, and distinguished friends, before we cut the cake tonight, there is a private confession my beloved Luca wanted to share with you all."

May you like

Luca’s face went completely pale with calculated fury.

Downstairs, through the mansion's built-in sound system, the fabricated audio began to play for the entire syndicate council.
