Chapter 1 - The Midnight Crash on Blackwood Bridge

The torrential rain struck the windshield of the black sedan like buckshot.
Claire Bennett gripped the leather steering wheel until her knuckles turned bloodless white.
Her breath fogged the cold glass of the driver side window.
Behind her on the desolate interstate, a pair of high-beam headlights hovered like predator eyes.
It was the heavy black SUV she had seen idling outside their gated suburban driveway twenty minutes prior.
Her husband, Grant Bennett, had assured her that she had nothing to fear from the world.
He had always insisted that his private security empire was built entirely to shield her from harm.
Yet tonight, after finding the hidden tracker stitched inside the lining of her designer handbag, the gilded cage had collapsed.
She had taken the only car with keys left in the entryway bowl and fled into the storm.
The interstate gave way to the elevated steel bridge crossing Blackwood Canal.
The black SUV surged forward, closing the distance until its chrome grill dominated her rearview mirror.
Her heart hammered violently against her ribs.
She reached for her phone to dial emergency services, but her trembling fingers knocked the device between the seats.
When she glanced back at the road, a sheet of standing water caught the sedan’s front tires.
The steering wheel snapped violently out of her hands.
Hydroplaning stripped away every ounce of traction.
The sedan spun a sickening three hundred and sixty degrees before violently plowing through the rusty metal guardrail.
The sound of shrieking metal ripped through the thunderstorm.
Then came the weightless terror of a thirty-foot freefall.
The car slammed nose-first into the freezing, murky canal below.
Cold black water erupted through the shattered windshield with concussive force.
Claire’s head struck the steering column, sending a blinding bolt of pain across her temple.
The cabin filled rapidly with churning, suffocating brown water.
She clawed desperately at her seatbelt buckle, but the jammed mechanism refused to yield.
The canal was rising to her chin.
Through the sinking rear glass, she saw the dark silhouette of another vehicle stopping along the elevated bank.
She choked on a swallow of muddy water and closed her eyes, bracing for the inevitable darkness.
Suddenly, a heavy steel tire iron shattered the intact driver-side window from the outside.
A pair of powerful, gloved hands reached through the swirling foam and debris.
A sharp blade sliced cleanly through her jammed seatbelt strap.
Before she could draw another breath, strong arms seized her by the shoulders and yanked her body through the jagged frame.
She was dragged upward through the freezing current into the violent autumn air.
The man hauled her onto the muddy embankment with effortless, disciplined precision.
Claire collapsed onto the gravel, coughing up canal water and gasping for oxygen.
Blood trickled warm and steady down the left side of her face.
Kneeling over her was a tall man in a tailored charcoal wool coat that was now ruined by canal mud.
His jaw was carved from granite, his dark eyes intensely observant and unnervingly calm.
His driver stood two paces behind him, scanning the perimeter with a drawn weapon concealed beneath his jacket.
"Breathe through your nose," the man instructed in a deep, gravelly voice.
Claire shivered violently, her soaked clothes clinging to her bruised skin.
"What is your name?" the man demanded quietly.
Sirens wailed faintly in the distance, echoing across the wet asphalt of the bridge.
Claire looked at the flashing emergency lights far down the highway, sheer terror seizing her throat.
"I can't be here when the police arrive," Claire gasped between shuddering breaths.
The man narrowed his eyes slightly.
"Why?"
Claire shifted her gaze toward the sunken vehicle, whose taillights were now fading into the dark water.
"Because my husband owns the company that built this entire town," she whispered.
Before the man could respond, the blinding beams of a second vehicle illuminated the embankment from above.
A black full-size SUV pulled onto the shoulder right above their heads.
Claire froze, every muscle in her body locking with primal dread.
The man looked from the arriving vehicle down to Claire’s trembling frame.
"You recognize that truck?"
Claire pulled herself closer to the stranger’s mud-stained boots.
"That's him."
The driver side door of the SUV opened, and Grant Bennett stepped into the rain.
He wore an immaculate camel-hair trench coat, completely unruffled by the storm.
He descended the embankment with slow, measured steps, not slipping once on the slick mud.

"Claire," Grant called out, his voice smooth, warm, and terrifyingly composed.
Luca Moretti slowly rose to his full height, stepping directly between Grant and the shivering woman on the ground.
