Chapter 5 - Shadows in the Smoke

The fire sprinklers in the hallway activated with a sharp mechanical hiss.
A fine mist of cold water began raining down through the ventilation grates.
Overhead, the piercing emergency horn continued to pulse at three-second intervals.
"Marco, secure the secondary stairwell," Luca commanded instantly.
Marco drew a suppressed nine-millimeter pistol from his shoulder holster and moved toward the doorway.
Detective Harris unholstered his service weapon, motioning for Claire’s attorney to take cover under the examination desk.
"Claire, get behind me," Luca said, his voice entirely steady amid the chaos.
Claire grabbed her soaking wet jacket, her adrenaline surging past her physical exhaustion.
She looked at Grant, who was curled on the floor against the medical cabinetry like a broken child.
"Get up, Grant!" Claire shouted over the alarm.
"If he wants the key, he will kill you first!"
Grant shook his head in blind panic.
"It doesn't matter... he owns the police, he owns the courts... we are already dead."
Heavy footsteps echoed down the tiled corridor outside.
They were not the hurried, frantic steps of fleeing nurses or hospital staff.
They were the rhythmic, calculated thuds of combat boots.
A single gunshot rang out, followed by the dull thud of a body hitting the floor.
The sheriff deputy stationed outside their door had been neutralized without a word.
Marco positioned himself beside the doorframe, peeking around the corner for half a second.
He snapped back immediately, raising three fingers to Luca.
Three tactical operators, armed with suppressed submachine guns and wearing night-vision optics.
Behind them walked a lone figure dressed in a tailored black wool trench coat.
Charles Vane stepped through the drifting mist of the hospital corridor with terrifying grace.
His silver hair was cut short, his eyes cold and predatory behind rimless glasses.
He carried no weapon in his hands, exuding the effortless confidence of a man who held the detonator to the city.
"Grant," Vane’s voice projected effortlessly through the sounding alarm.
"You were always an exceptionally weak vessel."
"I gave you five years of luxury, and you couldn't even keep a sheltered woman inside an estate."
Grant scrambled backward on his elbows, wedging himself beneath the stainless steel counter.
Vane stopped three paces outside the open doorway, his gaze sliding past Marco's gun barrel directly onto Luca Moretti.
"Mr. Moretti," Vane said smoothly, tilting his head with genuine amusement.
"What an unexpected inconvenience."
"I had budgeted your family's eradication for the second quarter of next year."
"You are accelerating your own funeral by meddling in my domestic acquisitions."
Luca did not raise his voice.
"You made a mistake bringing your garbage to my city, Charles."
Vane smiled thinly, adjusting his cuffs.
"This is no longer your city, Luca."
"The judges in your pocket have been re-assigned to my payroll."
"The docks where your shipments land are now monitored by my automated customs algorithms."
"And the woman standing behind you holds the thirty-two-character cryptographic seed to the entire eastern clearinghouse."
Vane raised his right hand slightly.
The two tactical operatives flanking him raised their weapons, preparing to breach the room.
Marco fired two precise rounds through the drywall, dropping the lead operator instantly.
The corridor erupted into gunfire.
Suppressed rounds shredded the hospital drywall, sending clouds of white plaster dust choking through the mist.
Luca pulled Claire down beneath the heavy iron examination table, shielding her body with his own.
Grant screamed in terror, scrambling toward the doorway in a desperate attempt to surrender.
"Charles, wait!" Grant shrieked, holding up his hands.
"I didn't open the files! It was her! Take her and let me go!"
Vane did not even look down.
A single suppressed round took Grant Bennett cleanly through the right shoulder, spinning him violently onto the wet floor.
"You have outlived your utility, Grant," Vane murmured coldly.
Luca drew a heavy-caliber firearm from his waistband and leaned around the steel frame.
He fired three rapid, concussive shots down the center of the hall.
The second tactical shooter collapsed against the fire hose station.
Vane stepped calmly behind the concrete pillar of the elevator bank, completely unbothered by the gunfire.
"We will finish this at your estate, Moretti," Vane’s voice echoed down the hall.
"Keep her warm for me."
"She is worth four billion dollars alive, but only three billion without her fingers."
Luca didn't waste ammunition chasing Vane through the smoke.
He grabbed Claire by the wrist, pulling her to her feet with unstoppable force.
"Marco, cover the fire exit!" Luca barked.
May you like
They dragged Claire through the back service elevator into the cold underground parking garage.
Behind them, Grant Bennett lay bleeding on the hospital tiles, listening to the approaching footsteps of the cleanup crew.
