Chapter 11 - The Fall of Charles Vane

Vane raised the chrome revolver, pointing the barrel straight between Claire’s eyes.

"Your father was a fool who died in a basement."

"And you are going to die on an oil platform in the middle of nowhere."

"No one will ever find your bodies in this deep water."

"I still have fifty million dollars in physical bearer bonds stored in the lower vault."

"I will disappear to South America, and you will be a footnote in an unsolved maritime accident."

Luca stepped forward, his massive frame shielding Claire without a second of hesitation.

"You won't make it to the lower vault, Charles."

Vane sneered, shifting his aim toward Luca's chest.

"Always the noble mobster, aren't you, Moretti?"

"Let's see how noble you look when I blow your heart out through your spine."

Vane squeezed the trigger.

At that exact split second, the heavy steel door behind the server racks burst open.

A blood-covered figure stumbled into the control room with a ragged, feral scream.

It was Grant Bennett.

He had somehow freed himself from the severed chain at the pier, following them aboard an auxiliary crew boat in a desperate, mad attempt to reclaim his stolen life.

Grant hurled his entire body weight against Charles Vane's right shoulder just as the gun discharged.

The bullet went wide, shattering a cooling line on the nearest server rack.

A jet of freezing liquid nitrogen hissed violently into the air.

Vane roared in fury, striking Grant across the face with the heavy steel frame of the revolver.

Grant collapsed onto the floor, clutching his bleeding nose, sobbing hysterically.

"You ruined me, Charles!" Grant screamed from the ground.

"You promised me I would be safe! You promised me a billion dollars!"

Vane raised the revolver to execute Grant where he lay.

"You pathetic worm," Vane spat.

Before Vane could pull the trigger, Claire stepped forward and fired two rounds from her nine-millimeter handgun.

The first bullet struck Vane’s right wrist, shattering the bone and sending the chrome revolver spinning across the floor.

The second bullet took him through the right kneecap.

Vane collapsed onto the steel grate with an agonized shriek, clutching his shattered leg as dark blood pooled around his fingers.

Luca crossed the room in two strides, kicking the fallen revolver over the railing into the churning ocean below.

He stood over Vane, towering like an executioner from ancient myth.

Vane looked up at Luca, gasping for air, the cold reality of his absolute defeat finally washing over his arrogant face.

"Do it, Moretti," Vane wheezed, spitting blood onto the linoleum.

"Put a bullet in my head."

"Finish it."

Luca looked down at him with cold, dispassionate eyes.

He slowly lowered his weapon and slid it back into his holster.

"Death is too quick for a man who loves control as much as you do, Charles."

Luca looked up at the monitors.

The server erasure had stalled at ninety-nine percent.

The remaining partition contained five decades of unredacted surveillance archives, financial ledgers, and audio wiretaps.

"The federal marshals and the Coast Guard will be boarding this platform in ten minutes," Luca said calmly.

"You are going to spend the rest of your miserable life in a supermax federal penitentiary in Colorado."

"In a concrete box twenty-three hours a day, with no phone, no leverage, and no one to listen to your voice."

Vane’s eyes widened in sheer, suffocating terror.

For a man who had built his life on the invisible manipulation of power, total silence was a fate worse than a thousand deaths.

Grant crawled over to Claire’s boots, his hands trembling as he reached for the hem of her trousers.

"Claire... please," Grant begged, tears streaming through the grime and blood on his cheeks.

"Tell them I helped you."

"Tell them I saved you from Charles."

"I was under duress, Claire! We can hire the best lawyers, we can keep the house, we can start over..."

Claire looked down at the man she had promised to love for five years.

She pulled her foot back cleanly from his grasp.

"There is no 'we', Grant."

"There was never a 'we'."

"You sold me before we even met."

"Enjoy your trial."

Outside the shattered windows of the operations deck, the deep horn of a United States Coast Guard cutter resonated through the ocean mist.

Blue and white searchlights swept across the oil rig, bathing the room in brilliant, inescapable illumination.

Luca reached out his hand to Claire.

She placed her cold fingers into his warm, solid grip, letting him lead her out onto the open deck into the clean morning air.
