Chapter 4 - When the Predator Becomes the Prey

The heavy wooden door of the hospital room swung open with sudden force.
Grant Bennett strode into the room, flanked by two corporate attorneys in thousand-dollar suits.
His camel-hair coat was dry now, his silver-streaked hair styled back into immaculate perfection.
"This circus ends right now," Grant barked, motioning to his legal counsel.
"Detective Harris, you are conducting an unauthorized digital search of privileged trade secrets."
"I have an emergency injunction signed by Superior Court Judge Campbell barring any examination of that drive."
Detective Harris did not flinch, holding up the county warrant.
"Campbell doesn't have jurisdiction over an open vehicular assault and evidence tampering investigation, Bennett."
Luca took two slow, deliberate steps forward, placing his towering frame directly in Grant's path.
The two corporate lawyers behind Grant instinctively halted, recognizing the lethal predator standing before them.
Grant tried to maintain his disdainful smirk, but his eyes darted toward the tablet screen on the rolling tray.
He saw the opened folder labeled 'LEVERAGE'.
He saw the photograph of Luca's uncle Victor.
Every drop of color drained instantly from Grant Bennett’s face.
The arrogant billionaire dissolved in a fraction of a second, replaced by a hollow shell of sheer panic.
"You opened it," Grant whispered, his voice trembling uncontrollably.
Claire stood up from the bed, holding the back of the steel chair for balance.
"Who is Charles Vane really working for, Grant?"
"And why does that drive say I am scheduled for liquidation?"
Grant looked frantically toward the hallway, as if expecting assassins to drop from the ceiling tiles.
"You don't understand what you've done," Grant stammered, pulling at his silk collar.
"Claire, pack your things right now."
"Detective, shut down that drive and destroy the hard drive bridge."
"If that drive's ping transmits to the central relay, none of us walk out of this hospital alive."
Luca stepped closer, his hand reaching out like lightning to seize Grant by the throat.
The two corporate attorneys backed against the wall, too terrified to speak.
Luca slammed Grant against the heavy drywall, his grip tightening until Grant’s feet barely touched the linoleum.
"Talk," Luca commanded in a terrifying whisper.
"Why does your firm have my family’s daily transit routes on an active target drive?"
Grant clawed at Luca's steel-like fingers, gasping desperately for air.
"It... it wasn't my idea," Grant choked out, his eyes bulging with terror.
"Vane never left three years ago."
"He didn't work for me... I worked for him."
Luca loosened his grip by a fraction, allowing Grant to draw a ragged breath.
"Explain," Luca ordered.
Grant slumped against the wall, clutching his bruised throat.
"Bennett Risk Solutions went insolvent four years ago after the port contract collapsed."
"Charles Vane came to me with unlimited private equity from a shadow syndicate in Eastern Europe."
"He saved my company, but he turned our entire infrastructure into a citywide surveillance and blackmail engine."
"He forced me to marry Claire."
Claire let out a shuddering gasp, tears of betrayal burning her eyes.
"What did you say?"
Grant looked at Claire with pathetic, desperate guilt.
"Your late father wasn't just an engineer, Claire."
"He built the sovereign cryptographic architecture used by the federal banking reserve."
"When he died, he left the master recovery phrase inside your family's estate archives."
"Vane couldn't crack the offline vault without you."
"He ordered me to court you, marry you, and isolate you until we could locate the phrase."
"The trackers in your bag, the cameras in our home... they weren't mine."
"They were Vane's."
"He was monitoring both of us."
Before Claire could process the monstrous scale of the lie that had been her entire marriage, the hospital fire alarm wailed.
The deafening horn echoed through the hallways, accompanied by the strobe of emergency strobe lights.
Luca’s phone vibrated violently against his hip.
He pulled it out and read the single encrypted text from his head of security stationed at the hospital perimeter:
SOUTH LOBBY COMPROMISED. HEAVY TACTICAL INBOUND. THEY ARE CUTTING MAIN POWER.
The fluorescent lights above flickered twice and died.
Emergency red backup lights clicked on, bathing the clinical room in blood-red shadows.
Grant fell to his knees in pure despair.

"He's here," Grant wept softly.
"He tracked the forensic decryption ping straight to this room."
