Chapter 10 - The Ghost in the Machine

The turbine engines of the interceptor boat screamed as it sliced through the six-foot swells of the Atlantic.
Cold ocean spray crashed violently over the fiberglass windshield, coating Claire's face in stinging salt water.
She gripped the grab bar of the center console, refusing to buckle under the violent pitching of the hull.
Luca stood at the helm, his knuckles white on the stainless steel steering wheel, his eyes fixed on the digital radar display.
A blinking green contact was fleeing four nautical miles ahead, heading directly toward a decommissioned deep-water oil platform anchored outside territorial waters.
"That platform was purchased by Bennett Risk Solutions three years ago under a dummy Panamanian registry," Luca said over the deafening roar of the engines.
"Vane didn't just use it for smuggling."
"It is a sovereign offshore data sanctuary."
"He has satellite banks and private servers out there completely insulated from federal jurisdiction."
Claire looked at the secondary terminal mounted on the dash.
Her smartphone, tethered to the boat's satellite communications array, was vibrating continuously with frantic news alerts.
She pulled up the live feed of the Major Financial Network.
The headline was flashing in bold emergency yellow across the bottom of the broadcast:
UNPRECEDENTED GLOBAL FINANCIAL LEAK: THOUSANDS OF OFFSHORE SHELL ACCOUNTS EXPOSED.
FEDERAL PROSECUTORS EXECUTE RAIDS ON BENNETT RISK SOLUTIONS AND CITY OFFICIALS.
DOZENS OF HIGH-RANKING JUDGES AND EXECUTIVES NAMED IN MASSIVE EXTORTION SCHEME.
Claire felt a cold shiver of vindication wash through her veins.
"The dead man's switch worked," she said, showing the screen to Luca.
"His leverage files are public."
"Every judge, every councilman, and every dirty contractor Vane owned is being rounded up by federal agents right now."
"The empire is dead on land."
Luca glanced at the screen, a grim smirk touching the corner of his lips.
"Which means he has nothing left to lose out here."
The massive silhouette of the abandoned oil rig loomed out of the fog like an iron mountain rising from the sea.
Industrial floodlights mounted on the lower deck cast a ghostly yellow glow across the choppy waves below.
Vane’s speedboat was already tied to the rusty steel docking stairs, rocking violently in the surging tide.
Luca throttled back the interceptor, maneuvering the boat beneath the shadow of the massive support pillars.
Marco tied off the vessel to the lower mooring ring with lightning speed.
"Two guards on the catwalk above," Marco reported, peering through his night-vision monocular.
"Take them out quietly," Luca ordered.
Two sharp, suppressed coughs from Marco’s rifle dropped the sentries on the upper steel grate.
Luca drew his sidearm and turned to Claire.
"Stay behind me on the stairs."
"The metal is slick with sea oil."
They climbed the iron spiral staircase thirty feet above the churning ocean.
The wind howled through the exposed steel framework, cold enough to freeze the breath in their lungs.
They reached the reinforced double doors of the rig's central operations deck.
The electronic magnetic lock had been bypassed with an emergency crowbar; Vane had fled inside in a hurry.
Luca kicked the heavy door open, clearing the room with his weapon raised.
Inside, the vast operations bay hummed with the deafening sound of industrial server racks and cooling fans.
Dozens of towering black cabinets with blinking blue LED lights lined the walls, processing petabytes of encrypted data.
In the center of the room, standing before a master control console, stood Charles Vane.
His immaculate cashmere coat was gone, replaced by a sweat-stained dress shirt.
He was frantically typing commands into a command-line terminal, trying desperately to halt the catastrophic digital hemorrhage.
Red error messages cascaded across six massive flat-screen monitors mounted above his head:
SYSTEM INTEGRITY COMPROMISED.
ACCOUNT ASSETS FROZEN BY SWIFT INTERBANK COOPERATIVE.
SERVER ERASURE COMMENCING: 84% COMPLETE.
Vane turned around, hearing their footsteps on the steel floor.
In his trembling right hand, he held a chrome-plated revolver.
His hair was disheveled, his eyes bloodshot and filled with the wild, untethered madness of a man whose god had just died.
"You destroyed forty years of work in forty seconds," Vane rasped, his voice shaking with venom.
"Do you have any idea what you've done, Claire?"
"I held this entire city together!"
"I controlled the politicians, the police chiefs, the prosecutors!"
"Without my leverage, there is only chaos!"
Claire walked past Luca, stopping ten paces away from the deranged syndicate boss.
She didn't raise her weapon; she simply stood tall, looking at him with absolute, unyielding contempt.
"You didn't control the city, Charles."
May you like
"You were just a parasite feeding on human fear."
"And my father made sure your host died tonight."
