Chapter 11 - The Harbor Inferno

The midnight air over Lake Michigan bit like broken glass.
Freezing spray lashed against the reinforced hull of the Moretti tactical speedboat as it cut silently through the black water.
Three unmarked vessels flanked Luca's lead craft, running completely dark with their navigation systems scrambled.
Ahead of them loomed Pier 42, the crown jewel of Sterling Logistics.
Rows of towering shipping containers stood like monoliths against the snowy skyline.
Inside the central warehouse, thousands of tons of contraband and corporate records were being hastily loaded onto a freighter bound for international waters.
Viktor Sterling was cutting his losses and fleeing Chicago.
Luca stood at the bow of the boat, his long wool coat snapping in the arctic gale.
His face was carved from granite, devoid of any hesitation.
Daniel Thorne stood beside him, checking the magazine of his submachine gun with a practiced click.
"The perimeter guards are positioned at every dock entrance, Boss," Daniel shouted over the roar of the twin diesel engines.
"They won't know what hit them until the gates are already bolted."
"No quarter for mercenaries," Luca replied coldly, his voice cutting through the wind.
"Secure the main office, and bring me Viktor alive."
The boat slammed against the wooden pilings of Pier 42 with a heavy thud.
Before the vessel had even come to a complete stop, Moretti operatives vaulted over the gunwales like shadows.
Suppressors coughed in rapid, muffled succession.
The few Sterling guards patrolling the dock crumpled silently into the freezing slush.
Luca stepped ashore, his heavy boots crushing a patch of thin ice.
The scent of diesel fuel and burning rubber filled the damp air.
He walked straight toward the corrugated steel doors of the main warehouse.
A pair of armed mercenaries burst from the side exit, raising their assault rifles.
Luca didn't flinch.
His Sig Sauer cleared leather with blinding speed.
Two sharp cracks echoed off the metal walls, and both men hit the pavement before their fingers could squeeze their triggers.
Daniel kicked the heavy steel door wide open, revealing the cavernous interior of the shipping depot.
Pallets of stolen merchandise and stacked financial ledgers littered the concrete floor.
At the far end of the warehouse, standing by a private elevator leading to the executive penthouse, was Viktor Sterling himself.
The aging syndicate boss was dressed in an expensive cashmere overcoat, his silver hair neatly combed despite the chaos.
In his hand, he clutched a leather briefcase stuffed with bearer bonds and passport documents.
"Well, well, well," Viktor sneered, forcing a brittle, confident smile as he tossed the briefcase aside.
"The great Luca Moretti, reduced to playing the role of an angry stray dog."
Luca walked slowly down the center aisle, his footsteps echoing off the corrugated iron ceiling.
"Your little proxy war is over, Viktor," Luca said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, lethal purr.
"Vanessa Bellini is in custody, her father's empire is bankrupt, and your encrypted transmitter is currently feeding federal investigators every offshore bank account you own."
Viktor's smug expression finally fractured, the color draining from his sallow cheeks.
"You think destroying a few shell companies touches me?" Viktor snarled, reaching slowly toward his armpit.
"I built this city's underground long before your father learned how to launder a dollar."
Before Viktor's fingers could wrap around the grip of his hidden revolver, Daniel's rifle barrel slammed violently across his wrist.
A sharp crack of bone echoed through the warehouse.
Viktor screamed, clutching his broken hand to his chest as he collapsed backward against the elevator doors.
Luca stopped inches away from him, looking down with absolute contempt.
"You tried to infiltrate my home, manipulate an unborn child, and tear my life apart from the inside," Luca whispered.
"You made a fatal miscalculation."
"You thought I was a businessman."
"I am a Moretti."
Luca signaled with a single tilt of his head.
Daniel hauled the screaming syndicate boss to his feet, zip-tying his wrists behind his back with brutal efficiency.
"Take him to the federal intake facility downtown," Luca commanded.
