Chapter 3 - The Paperwork of Treason

Luca guided Hannah into the master study adjacent to the nursery.
The room was lined with dark walnut bookshelves, the air thick with leather and old paper.
Daniel Thorne, Luca's chief of personal security, was waiting by the desk.
Daniel was a former Marine who had stood at Luca's side through two syndicate wars.
He did not blink when he saw the pregnant, weeping girl entering the room.
"Boss," Daniel said, his hand instinctively resting on the grip of his concealed firearm.
"Take Miss Walsh's bag," Luca commanded.
"Search it for documents, then have two armed men escort her to the third-floor guest suite."
"No one enters that room without my personal authorization."
"Not even the Bellinis?" Daniel asked.
"Especially not the Bellinis."
Luca turned to Hannah.
"What else did she make you sign?"
Hannah reached inside the front pocket of her wool sweater.
Her fingers were shaking so violently she dropped the folded sheaf of legal parchment onto the desk.
Luca picked it up.
The heading was printed in crisp, blue ink from a high-profile family law firm in Loop Chicago:
IRREVOCABLE MATERNAL SURRENDER AND POST-NATAL ADOPTION COVENANT.
Luca's eyes scanned the clauses with practiced speed.
The document identified Hannah Walsh as the gestational carrier.
It designated the adoptive parents as Luca Moretti and Vanessa Bellini.
Beneath the primary contract was an addendum dated August fourteenth.
That was ninety days ago.
Ninety days ago, Luca had not even purchased an engagement ring.
He had been courting Vanessa under the strict, traditional rules dictated by Alberto Bellini.
They had shared formal dinners, attended charity galas, and maintained separate residences.
He had not slept with her.
He had never discussed children with her.
Luca turned to the final page.
There was a clause typed in bold, eight-point font at the bottom of the surrender agreement:
In the event of the father's untimely demise, legal incapacitation, or marital separation,
full and exclusive custody of the minor child shall vest permanently with Vanessa Bellini.
The child shall remain the primary beneficiary of the Moretti Family Trust,
with Vanessa Bellini appointed as sole executor and conservator until the child reaches age twenty-five.
Luca stared at the words.
The mechanism of the trap became instantly, terrifyingly clear.
This was not a desperate woman trying to secure an unfaithful lover.
This was an institutional coup.
If Vanessa had a child carrying the Moretti name, and Luca met an "unfortunate accident" on the docks,
she would control sixty percent of the northern shipping lines and every commercial real estate trust he owned.
Alberto Bellini had been losing money in offshore accounts for three consecutive quarters.
His empire was bleeding cash.
Vanessa was not bringing an heir into the family.
She was importing a golden key to strip the Moretti dynasty down to the bone.
"Mr. Moretti?"
Hannah's voice interrupted his thoughts.
She was clutching her stomach, her face pale under the study's green reading lamp.
"She told me my baby would have the best life in the world."
"She said you had thousands of acres, private schools, security."
"She made it sound like an adoption."
Luca folded the papers and slipped them into his breast pocket.
"Vanessa Bellini has never cared for another human life in her existence," Luca said quietly.
"Daniel."
"Sir."
"Where is Lauren?"
"In the conservatory clinic downstairs. Dr. Harris just finished six internal sutures and ten staples."
"Is she lucid?"
"She refused the pain medication, Boss. She said she couldn't afford to be asleep if she got fired."
A muscle ticked in Luca's jaw.
"Bring her up here."
"She can barely walk, Boss—"
"I will carry her if necessary. Bring her to this study."
Five minutes later, the side door clicked open.
Daniel supported Lauren, whose left leg was now encased in a heavy white pressure bandage.
She looked small and pale, her white maid's collar stained with a faint circle of diluted blood.
When her eyes landed on Hannah, a gasp escaped her lips.
"Hannah! Oh, thank God, you didn't leave through the gates—"
"Lauren, sit," Luca commanded, pulling out his personal leather executive chair.
Lauren hesitated, looking terrified of soiling the butter-soft leather.
"Sit down before you tear those staples open."
She lowered herself into the chair, clutching the armrests.
Luca stood before both women, the silence in the room heavy enough to crack glass.
"Lauren, you lied to me in the dining room."
Lauren looked down at her hands, her lower lip trembling.
"Mr. Moretti, I had to. You don't understand what Vanessa can do."
"I understand far better than you think."
"My mother... she's at Saint Jude's Hospice," Lauren whispered.
"The Bellini foundation covers eighty percent of the room and board."
"Vanessa came down to the laundry room two hours ago."
"She told me that if I opened my mouth about the screaming upstairs, my mother would be on the street by midnight."
Lauren looked up, her green eyes fierce despite the tears.
"I couldn't let Hannah take the blame, but I couldn't let my mother die in an alley either."
Luca walked to his desk.
He picked up his private satellite telephone.
He dialed a three-digit extension.
"Marcus," Luca spoke into the receiver.
"The Saint Jude's facility in Oak Lawn. The Mitchell account."
"Transfer the entire remaining balance of her lifetime care to the Moretti Primary Trust."
"Wire five hundred thousand dollars to their executive board tonight as an unrestricted endowment."
"If a single Bellini representative steps onto that property, have them arrested for criminal trespass."
Luca hung up the phone without waiting for a reply.
He looked back at Lauren.
"Your mother's care is paid in full for the next thirty years."
Lauren covered her mouth with both hands, a choked sob tearing from her throat.
"Mr. Moretti... I can't... I can never repay that—"
"You repaid it when you took a blow meant for an innocent girl," Luca replied.
He reached into his desk drawer and pulled out a small silver tape recorder.
He pressed the eject button, revealing a micro-cassette.
"Daniel."
"Yes, Boss."
"Connect the study audio feed to the dining room's integrated sound system."
"The whole system?" Daniel's eyes gleamed with cold satisfaction.
"Every single speaker," Luca said, his voice dropping into a register that promised ruin.
