Chapter 14 - A Promise Kept

The afternoon sun cast long, golden amber shadows across the private courtyard garden behind the Moretti estate.
The snow was slowly beginning to melt, dripping in sparkling crystal droplets from the wrought-iron branches of the grand oak trees.
Lauren stood by the stone fountain, breathing in the crisp, clean winter air.
For the first time in a year, the constant, suffocating weight of rent, hospital bills, and survival was gone from her shoulders.
Her mother had called from Saint Jude's an hour ago, crying tears of joy after receiving a personal visit from the hospital director confirming her lifetime care was fully secured.
"Thinking about leaving?"
A deep, familiar voice broke the quiet stillness of the garden.
Lauren turned around to see Luca walking down the stone pathway, his hands buried deep in the pockets of his dark overcoat.
"Not leaving, Mr. Moretti," Lauren smiled, shaking her head gently.
"Just... trying to process everything that's happened in the last forty-eight hours."
"It's been a turbulent week," Luca acknowledged, stopping a few feet away from her.
"Even by Moretti standards."
He looked down at her bandaged leg, noting how she no longer needed the crutch or the heavy support brace.
"How is the knee?"
"Dr. Harris says the staples come out on Thursday," Lauren replied, her green eyes meeting his dark, intense gaze.
"I'll be back on my feet completely by the weekend."
"Good," Luca said softly.
"Because I have a proposition for you."
Lauren's breath caught slightly in her throat.
"A proposition, sir?"
"You've spent the last year scrubbing floors and dodging Vanessa's cruelty to keep your family afloat," Luca said, his voice dropping into a warm, serious register.
"And yet, when faced with terror and intimidation, you risked your life to protect a stranger."
"That isn't the profile of a domestic servant, Lauren."
"That is the profile of someone who should be running this estate, not cleaning it."
Lauren's eyes widened in sheer disbelief.
"Mr. Moretti... I'm a housekeeper. I don't know anything about running a multi-million-dollar syndicate estate—"
"You know loyalty," Luca interrupted gently.
"You know courage."
"And the rest can be taught."
He reached out, his warm, calloused fingers brushing against her knuckles for a brief, electric second.
"I am establishing the Moretti Community Foundation for underprivileged families in Chicago."
"I need a director who understands what real struggle looks like."
"Someone incorruptible."
"Someone like you."
Lauren stood frozen, the magnitude of his words washing over her like a tidal wave.
She had spent her entire life hiding in the shadows of wealthy mansions, invisible to the powerful men who ruled the city.
Now, the most feared man in Chicago was offering her a seat at his side.
"Are you offering me a job, Mr. Moretti?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly.
May you like
"I am offering you a partnership," Luca corrected her, a faint, genuine smile touching the corners of his mouth.
"Take the night to think about it."
