Chapter 4 - The Anatomy of a Lie

The dining room was filled with the warm, golden glow of candlelight.
Dessert plates had been cleared, replaced by glasses of vintage port and platters of artisanal cheeses.
Vanessa Bellini was in her element.
She sat reclined against her high-backed chair, laughing at a story told by one of the city's top judges.
Her diamond engagement ring caught the light, throwing brilliant sparks across the linen.
Alberto Bellini was puffing on a contraband Cuban cigar, completely disregarding the house rules.
"I'm telling you, Judge," Alberto boomed, his belly shaking with laughter.
"The Moretti-Bellini merger will control every container vessel entering the Great Lakes by spring."
"And with a grandson on the way, the bloodline is unbreakable!"
Several guests raised their glasses in agreement.
The heavy mahogany double doors at the end of the dining hall swung open with a muffled thud.
Luca walked back into the room.
He did not walk quickly.
His stride was measured, majestic, and terrifyingly deliberate.
Behind him walked Daniel Thorne, followed by two armed guards in dark suits.
Between them hobbled Lauren, leaning heavily on a lightweight titanium crutch provided by Dr. Harris.
And beside Lauren walked Hannah Walsh.
The room did not fall silent instantly.
It happened in waves, like ripples spreading across a pond.
First, the judge stopped talking mid-sentence.
Then the matriarchs at the center table set their glasses down with trembling hands.
Finally, Alberto Bellini's cigar froze halfway to his mouth.
Vanessa's laughter died in her throat.
Her eyes locked onto Hannah's face.
All the color drained from Vanessa's cheeks, leaving her immaculate foundation looking like chalk.
"Luca?" Vanessa's voice was thin, reedy, stripped of its aristocratic polish.
"What is the meaning of this? Why have you brought those people back into the dining room?"
Luca did not answer her.
He reached the head of the table.
With a casual flick of his wrist, he picked up the silver sonogram frame Vanessa had placed on the table earlier.
He spun it between his fingers like a coin.
"We were discussing milestones, weren't we, Alberto?" Luca asked smoothly.
Alberto blinked, his bushy eyebrows drawing together in a scowl.
"Luca, what the hell is going on here? You're parading the servants in front of our guests."
"This is not a servant, Alberto," Luca said, gesturing toward Hannah.
"This is Hannah Walsh."
"She is twenty-two weeks pregnant."
Luca turned the silver frame toward the guests.
"Vanessa, tell our guests about this ultrasound."
Vanessa swallowed hard, her hand instinctively moving toward her belly.
"Luca, stop this madness. You're having some kind of episode—"
"Tell them what the doctor said," Luca commanded, his voice slicing through her deflection.
"Tell them which clinic performed the scan."
"I... I told you, Northwestern Memorial! Dr. Chen!"
Luca nodded slowly.
He tossed the silver frame onto the center of the table.
The glass shattered against an empty wine bottle with a loud crack.
"This scan was performed at Mercy Women's Pavilion in Kankakee County."
"The date stamped on the original file is September twelfth."
"And the name on the medical chart was not Vanessa Bellini."
Luca looked directly at Hannah.
"Whose sonogram is that, Hannah?"
Hannah stepped forward, her voice shaking but clear.
"It belongs to me."
A collective gasp swept through the room.
One of the older women dropped her silver fork onto her china plate with a clatter.
"She's lying!" Vanessa shrieked, jumping to her feet so violently her chair tipped backward.
"She's an extortionist! She's a homeless girl my father's charity took in!"
"She's trying to shake us down for money because she knows who you are, Luca!"
"Is she?" Luca asked.
He reached into his breast pocket and pulled out the folded legal documents.
He opened them with a crisp snap of paper that echoed through the room.
"Then explain why your signature is on this maternal surrender contract, dated three months ago."
Alberto Bellini went rigid.
The cigar slipped from his fingers, scorching the white linen tablecloth.
"Explain why this agreement names you as the sole legal conservator of my estate in the event of my death."
Luca laid the papers flat on the table, sliding them directly in front of the city judge.
The judge picked them up, adjusted his reading glasses, and began to read.
Within five seconds, the judge's face turned completely gray.
"Jesus Christ, Alberto," the judge whispered.
"This is an unnotarized custody transfer for an unborn infant."
"It's a fake!" Vanessa screamed, her nails digging into the mahogany.
"Luca, she forged that! The maid helped her! Lauren hates me because I reprimanded her!"
Luca stepped closer to Vanessa.
He was so close she could feel the heat radiating from his chest.
"Lauren did not forge this."
"Lauren was on the floor of the nursery, bleeding from an open wound because you attacked her."
"I didn't touch her!"
Luca leaned down until his mouth was inches from Vanessa's ear.
"You struck her with a bronze lamp when she tried to unlock the door for this girl."
"And then you stood in front of twenty-six witnesses and claimed she fell while moving furniture."
"Because you needed to explain why my house was covered in blood before I found out what you were hiding."
Vanessa took a step back, her knees trembling so badly she had to brace herself against the table.
"Luca... please... we can talk about this privately..."
"There is nothing private about high treason, Vanessa."
Luca turned his gaze to Alberto Bellini.
The old don was sweating profusely, the veins in his neck bulging like thick cords.
"Did you know about this, Alberto?"
Alberto rose slowly, trying to maintain an aura of authority he no longer possessed.
"Now, listen to me, Moretti. We are partners. We run this city together."
"My daughter may have used... unconventional methods to secure the future of our families—"
"'Unconventional methods?'" Luca repeated the phrase with icy venom.
"You attempted to plant an undocumented infant into my household."
"You planned to manufacture an heir, eliminate me, and bleed my family dry through proxy trusts."
"That is not a partnership, Alberto."
Luca's hand moved inside his jacket.
Every man at the table froze.
The silence was absolute.
Luca did not pull a gun.
He pulled the five-carat emerald-cut diamond ring from his pocket—the family heirloom he was supposed to slip onto Vanessa's finger tonight.
He tossed it into her untouched glass of red wine.
The diamond sank to the bottom like a stone.
"The engagement is terminated."

"The Bellini shipping contracts are voided as of this second."
"And you have exactly five minutes to remove yourselves from my estate before my men treat you as hostile invaders."
