Chapter 9 - Breach at Midnight

The clock on the library wall struck 1:15 AM.
Upstairs in the east wing, Hannah had finally drifted into a deep, medicated sleep.
Lauren sat by the window in her private guest room, watching the heavy snow begin to fall over the Chicago skyline in the distance.
Suddenly, the estate's master generator let out a dying wheeze.
Every exterior light surrounding the Moretti compound flickered once—and then plunged into absolute darkness.
Lauren stood up sharply, wincing as weight pressed onto her freshly stapled knee.
"What's happening?" she whispered to herself.
Before she could reach the door, the unmistakable, muffled thump-thump of silenced gunfire echoed from the lower courtyard.
Alarm klaxons began to wail across the estate, shrieking red emergency strobes cutting through the pitch-black corridors.
Downstairs, heavy combat boots pounded against the marble foyer.
Daniel Thorne's voice boomed over the internal intercom system, urgent and clipped.
"Code Red! Perimeter breach at the west gate!"
"All non-combat personnel lock down in the safe rooms immediately!"
Lauren's heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird.
She couldn't stay in the guest room.
Hannah was asleep just down the hall, defenseless and terrified.
Grabbing her crutch, Lauren threw open her door and hobbled as fast as her injured leg would carry her toward the medical suite.
As she turned the corner into the hallway, two masked figures dressed in black tactical gear emerged from the stairwell.
They weren't Moretti guards.
Their assault rifles were fitted with customized Sterling syndicate insignia.
One of the intruders spotted Lauren instantly, raising his weapon with cold calculation.
"Target sighted in the corridor," the man barked into his shoulder radio.
Lauren froze, her breath catching in her throat, bracing for the impact of a bullet.
Before the trigger could be pulled, a dark shadow dropped from the ceiling rafters directly above the intruder.
Luca Moretti landed with brutal, predatory grace.
Before the second mercenary could react, Luca's hand clamped around his windpipe, smashing his head against the oak wall with a sickening crunch.
The first gunman tried to swing his rifle barrel toward Luca.
Luca drew his custom Sig Sauer pistol in a single, fluid motion and fired twice.
Both rounds caught the intruder squarely in the tactical vest, sending him crashing backward onto the carpet.
The hallway went dead silent once more, save for the wailing alarm strobes.
Luca turned around, his chest heaving slightly, his dark eyes locking onto Lauren.
He holstered his weapon and strode toward her in three long strides.
"What in God's name are you doing out of your room, Lauren?" he demanded, his voice sharp with suppressed panic.
"Hannah... she's still asleep down the hall," Lauren managed to gasp out, her hands shaking uncontrollably.
"I had to make sure she was safe."
Luca stared at her for a fraction of a second, seeing the raw, unselfish courage burning in her green eyes.
He didn't yell at her again.
Instead, he scooped her effortlessly into his arms, bridal-style, ignoring her gasp of surprise.

"Hold onto my neck," Luca commanded, turning toward the reinforced panic room hidden behind the library paneling.
"We're moving. Now."
