Chapter 4 - The Ultimatum at Dawn and the Devil's Bargain

The raw, vibrating threat hung heavily in the sterile silence of the penthouse kitchen, turning the air instantly toxic.
Dante didn't flinch, his thumb slowly sliding over the end-call button on the encrypted satellite phone before tossing it back onto the marble counter with a dull clack.
Elena stood frozen near the edge of the polished concrete living room, her breath catching in her throat as the horrifying reality of the situation washed over her.
"That was your uncle, Viktor Moretti," she whispered, her voice trembling uncontrollably.
"He knows I'm here. He knows I have the ledger."
"He knows you're the key to destabilizing my entire operation," Dante corrected, walking over to the stainless-steel refrigerator and pulling out a bottle of pristine mineral water.
He unscrewed the cap, taking a slow sip before looking back at her with eyes as cold and unyielding as winter stone.
"And he knows that if I don't hand you and the black book over by dawn, my own captains will assume I've gone soft and turn their backs on me."
Elena stepped forward, her hands clenching into tight fists at her sides.
"Then hand me over!" she snapped, a desperate, hysterical edge creeping into her tone.
"Let him have me! If my father's ledger is what started this war, then take the book and let me go home!"
In less than a second, Dante crossed the distance between them.
He grabbed her by the shoulders, slamming her gently but firmly back against the exposed brick wall of the living room, effectively caging her within the span of his broad frame.
"Listen to me very carefully, Elena," Dante growled, his face inches from hers, his dark eyes burning with a dangerous, hypnotic intensity.
"If I hand you over to Viktor, you won't survive the hour. He doesn't want leverage; he wants every single person who ever touched Julian Vance's ledgers erased from history so his own embezzlement stays buried."
Elena stared up into his fierce, unyielding gaze, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs, completely trapped by the raw power radiating from him.
"Then what do we do?" she whispered, her voice softening, losing its defensive edge.
"We don't wait for him to dictate the terms," Dante said, a dark, brilliant spark of strategy igniting in his eyes.
"We go to Pier 4 on our own terms. But we don't bring the real ledger."
Elena’s eyes widened in realization. "You want to make a fake."
"I want to draw Viktor out into the open where my loyalists can corner him," Dante corrected, stepping back just enough to give her breathing room.
"And for that, I need the daughter of Julian Vance to help me forge a document convincing enough to fool a man who spent thirty years auditing the underworld."
He turned away, walking over to a heavy steel desk in the corner of the penthouse and unlocking a secure drawer with a biometric scanner.
He pulled out an identical black leather-bound book, sliding it across the polished concrete floor toward her feet.

"You have four hours until dawn, Elena," Dante said, his voice dropping into a challenge.
"Show me why your father trusted you with his legacy."
