Chapter 9 - The Burning Ledger and the Truth Revealed

The penthouse safehouse was blissfully quiet, bathed in the soft, warm glow of the morning sun as it finally broke through the heavy Manhattan clouds.
Elena sat at the metal desk, nursing a cup of hot black coffee, watching the faint wisps of steam rise from the ceramic mug.
Dante stood by the floor-to-ceiling security glass, staring out at the bustling city below, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, exposing the dark ink of his tattoos.
The decoy ledger sat on the desk between them—or rather, what was left of it.
Dante had tossed it into the stainless-steel sink and set it ablaze an hour ago, watching the forged pages reduce to gray ash before washing them down the drain.
"Viktor tried to access the first offshore account in the Cayman Islands at seven o'clock this morning," Dante said, breaking the silence without turning around.
"And?" Elena asked, leaning forward.
"The moment he entered the routing number you forged, it triggered an automated flag directly to the Federal Bureau of Investigation's white-collar crime division," Dante replied, a low, humorless chuckle rumbling in his chest.
"By eight o'clock, federal agents had raided his primary estate in the Hamptons and frozen twenty-eight million dollars in illicit assets."
Elena let out a long, shuddering breath, the tension that had gripped her chest for the past month finally beginning to dissipate.
"Then my father's name is cleared?" she asked softly.
"Your father was a complicated man, Elena," Dante said, finally turning around and walking slowly toward the desk.
"He made mistakes, and he got caught up in a world he was never meant to survive. But he protected you to his last breath. He made sure the true evidence of Viktor's embezzlement was placed in a secure vault that only I could open—with your help."
Elena looked up at him, her heart skipping a beat as Dante stopped right beside her chair.
"Why did you keep me around, Dante?" she asked, the question hanging heavily in the air between them.
"Why not just use the ledger and let me go back to my quiet life?"
Dante leaned down, placing his large, warm hand over hers where it rested on the cool metal of the desk.

"Because, Elena," Dante whispered, his voice dropping into a rough, hypnotic cadence, "in a world built on lies, betrayal, and blood, you were the only real thing I've found in a very long time."
Before she could formulate a reply, Dante gently tilted her chin upward, his dark eyes locking onto hers with a devastating, irresistible intensity.
