Chapter 6 - The Setup at Pier 4 and the Trap is Sprung

The dense morning fog rolled off the freezing waters of the East River, wrapping around the towering industrial cranes and rusted warehouses of Pier 4 like a suffocating shroud.

The armored Mercedes pulled up behind a row of empty shipping containers, its engine dying with a soft, mechanical sigh.

Inside the vehicle, the tension was thick enough to cut with a knife.

Elena sat in the passenger seat, her fingers tightly clutching the black leather-bound decoy ledger inside her coat pocket.

Her heart hammered a frantic, deafening rhythm against her ribs, but her expression was an icy mask of composure.

Dante shifted the car into park, turning his head to look at her with an intensity that pierced through the dim cabin light.

"Remember the plan," Dante instructed quietly, his voice a low, gravelly hum.

"You stay in the car until I give you the signal. If things go sideways, you take the service exit at the rear of the pier and you don't look back."

"And what about you?" Elena asked, her voice trembling slightly despite her best efforts to keep it steady.

Dante reached inside his jacket, pulling back the fabric to reveal the custom-gilded Beretta tucked securely into his shoulder holster.

"I’m going to collect a debt," Dante replied with a dark, chilling smile that didn't reach his eyes.

Without waiting for another word, Dante pushed his door open and stepped out into the freezing morning mist, disappearing into the shadows between the massive warehouses.

Elena watched him go, the heavy silence of the car closing in around her like a physical weight.

Through the frosted windshield, she could make out the faint silhouette of several heavy-duty trucks idling near the end of the pier, surrounded by a dozen armed men wearing dark winter coats.

Viktor Moretti stood at the center of the group, leaning casually against the hood of a black Lincoln Navigator, smoking a thick Cuban cigar that glowed a faint, angry red in the fog.

"Bring her out!" Viktor’s booming voice carried across the concrete expanse, echoing off the corrugated metal walls.

Dante stepped into the dim amber pool of a overhead yard light, raising his hands slightly to show he was unarmed, though everyone present knew he was never truly defenseless.

"You're early, Uncle," Dante called out, his voice cutting effortlessly through the damp morning air.

"Where is the girl, Dante?" Viktor demanded, tossing his cigar aside and crushing it beneath his polished leather shoe as he stepped forward.

"I didn't come to negotiate with an empty chair."

Dante raised two fingers in a sharp, crisp gesture.

Inside the Mercedes, Elena took a deep, steadying breath, pushed her door open, and stepped out onto the wet pavement.
