Chapter 1 - The Girl Who Forgot How to Cry

“Dad told me being brave means not crying.” Seven-year-old Lila said it so softly. Her teacher, Ms. Valerie Kincaid, almost missed the heartbreaking whisper. The morning sun was streaming through the classroom windows, but there was no warmth in Lila’s eyes.

Valerie watched as the child approached her desk. Lila lowered herself carefully into her small wooden chair. She moved with the rigid caution of an old woman. Whenever another student ran past, she protected one side of her body. She flinched at sudden noises and shrank away from shadows.

Valerie had been teaching second grade for ten years, and she knew what those subtle, terrified movements meant. A bad teacher might have ignored it. A careless teacher might have just asked the child directly. But Valerie didn’t interrogate her; she didn’t want to scare the little girl back into her shell. Instead, she knelt down beside Lila's desk, smiled warmly, and offered her a new box of crayons.

"You're very brave, Lila," Valerie whispered back. "But even brave people are allowed to cry." Lila’s lower lip trembled, but she quickly bit it. She looked terrified of her own tears.

Valerie stood up, her heart pounding with a fierce, protective instinct. She walked straight to her desk, picked up the phone, and called the school nurse immediately. She followed protocol to the letter. Within twenty minutes, the nurse was examining the child. Within an hour, Lila was being transported to the local children’s hospital. The wheels of justice were finally turning, but nobody realized how deep the corruption actually went.
