Chapter 3 - The Buried Cry For Help

Detective Sarah Jennings took charge of the investigation. She visited Lila's elementary school the next morning because she needed to know how this had gone unnoticed for so long. Jennings started digging through the school's physical archives. In the basement filing room, she finally found Lila's permanent record.

Tucked away in the very back of the folder was a crumpled piece of paper. It was a school note from the previous semester, written by Lila’s former first-grade teacher, Mrs. Albright. The red ink on the paper practically screamed for help. The teacher had written: "Student repeatedly says she is afraid to go home after making mistakes. Student has unexplained marks on her forearms. I strongly suspect abuse in the home."

Detective Jennings felt a cold knot form in her stomach. By law, teachers are mandated reporters. This report should have triggered an immediate CPS investigation. It should have saved Lila months of unimaginable pain. But the report had never reached child-protection services. Why?

Jennings flipped the paper over. At the bottom, in neat, authoritative handwriting, were the words: "Resolved with parent. No further action required." Next to it was the signature of the school's principal, Mr. Richard Harrison. He had intentionally buried a child's desperate plea for help. He had left a seven-year-old girl in the hands of a monster. The detective’s sadness instantly turned into blinding rage as she marched straight up to the principal's office.
