Chapter 8 - A New Definition of Brave

Two years later, the courthouse doors swung open. Arthur Sterling had been sentenced to twenty-five years in maximum security. Principal Harrison received ten years for his role in the cover-up. The truth had completely cleansed the town's corruption. But the most beautiful ending wasn't found in the courtroom; it was found in a sunny, chaotic, joyful living room.
Lila was now nine years old. Her bruises had faded into nothing more than distant memories. She was sitting on a soft rug, laughing hysterically. She was painting a picture, getting messy, making mistakes. And she wasn't afraid to go home anymore, because she was already home.
After the trial, Valerie Kincaid had applied to become Lila's foster mother. Six months ago, the adoption had become beautifully, legally permanent. Valerie watched her daughter from the kitchen, a cup of coffee in hand. Suddenly, Lila accidentally knocked over a cup of blue water onto the floor.

The old Lila would have frozen in absolute terror. She would have protected her ribs and prepared for a strike. But the new Lila just gasped, looked up at Valerie, and giggled. "Oops! I made a mess, Mom!"
Valerie smiled brightly, tossing her a towel. "That's okay, bug. Messes happen. Just wipe it up." Lila smiled back, her eyes shining with pure, unbridled freedom. She didn't have to be the wrong kind of brave anymore. She was safe. She was loved. She was finally allowed to just be a child. And the secret that almost destroyed her, had ultimately set her free.
