Chapter 7 - The Breach of the Basement Bulkhead and the Rescue of Emily Vance

The heavy steel bulkhead doors leading down to the basement of the textile warehouse were secured by a military-grade electronic keypad lock flashing a faint blue standby light.
Marco knelt before the keypad, pulling a compact digital decoder from his tactical vest and plugging it directly into the auxiliary data port beneath the buttons.
"Bypassing their encrypted relay," Marco murmured under his breath, his fingers dancing across the tiny screen of his decoder.
"They're using a rolling frequency code... clever, but their firewall architecture is amateur tier compared to our marine security protocols."
BEEP.
The blue light on the keypad abruptly shifted to a solid, welcoming green.
The heavy hydraulic locks inside the concrete bulkhead unlatched with a deep, muffled pneumatic thunk.
"I'm in," Marco signaled, raising his weapon and gesturing for the breaching team to fan out on either side of the metal doors.
I stepped forward, placing my hand flat against the cold steel of the bulkhead, and nodded.
Marco pulled the doors open with a sharp upward heave.
A wave of stale, damp air rushed up from the basement, carrying the faint smell of industrial bleach, old dust, and unwashed fear.
"Flashbangs ready," I ordered, unhooking a stun grenade from my tactical harness.
"On my mark: three, two, one... breach."
I pulled the pin and tossed the stun grenade down the concrete stairwell, followed immediately by Marco and two front-line operatives.
BANG-FLASH!
A blinding white concussion echoed violently through the subterranean chamber, accompanied by a deafening roar that scrambled the nervous systems of anyone waiting inside.
"Go! Go! Go!" I shouted, charging down the concrete steps with my Sig Sauer raised and locked forward.
The basement was a sprawling, subterranean bunker partitioned with chain-link fencing and concrete pillars.
Through the dissipating white smoke, two foreign mercenaries stumbled backward from a makeshift guard desk, their night-vision goggles fried by the stun grenade flash.
Pop. Pop.
Two suppressed rounds dropped them instantly before they could even lift their carbines.
"Clear left!"
"Clear right!"
"Hostage door secured at the end of the hall!" Marco bellowed, kicking open a heavy wooden door reinforced with iron bolts.
I rushed past the smoking corridor into the small, windowless holding room.
Tied securely to a plastic chair in the center of the room was a little girl no older than six, wearing a pink unicorn sweater, her eyes wide with unmasked terror and duct tape slapped firmly across her mouth.
"It's okay, sweetheart. You're safe now," I murmured, holstering my weapon and dropping to my knees beside her.
I gently peeled the duct tape away from her mouth, carefully cutting the heavy zip-ties binding her wrists to the chair with my tactical knife.
The little girl—Thomas’s daughter, Emily—let out a muffled, heartbroken sob and threw her arms around my neck, burying her face into my tactical vest.
"My daddy... they said my daddy wouldn't come back," she cried softly.
"Your daddy is waiting for you at home, Emily," I promised, lifting her gently into my arms and standing up.

"Marco, get her to the lead vehicle. Secure her with a medic team and put our cyber unit on high alert—we just triggered a silent tripwire on the holding room door."
Marco’s eyes widened. "Tripwire? Boss, that wasn't a guard post... that was a dead-man's switch."
