Chapter 8 - The Dead-Man's Switch and the Ambush in the Dark

The moment Marco uttered the words dead-man's switch, the entire subterranean bunker shuddered violently.
A low, mechanical hum vibrated through the concrete foundations, followed immediately by the harsh, blaring sound of an automated red emergency strobe flashing overhead.
"Get her out of here! Now!" I roared, shoving Emily into Marco’s arms and pushing them toward the bulkhead stairs.
Marco didn't argue. He scooped the little girl up against his chest and sprinted up the concrete steps toward the waiting vehicles outside.
I spun around, raising my Sig Sauer as heavy automatic gunfire suddenly erupted from the shadows of the main subterranean corridor.
Rat-tat-tat-tat!
Bullets chewed into the concrete pillars inches from my head, sending a violent shower of gray dust and stone shrapnel cascading across my shoulders.
More mercenaries. Not just a six-man vanguard, but a reinforced platoon pouring out from hidden shipping container tunnels carved into the back wall of the bunker.
They hadn't just been guarding a hostage; they had been waiting for us to trigger the trap.
I dropped flat onto the concrete floor, rolling behind a thick concrete support pillar just as a barrage of high-caliber rounds splintered the air above me.
"Vincent! Do you copy?" I barked into my comms unit, returning fire with three rapid shots that dropped the leading merc rushing my position.
"Copy, Boss! We see the reinforcement wave pouring out of the container tunnels!" Vincent’s voice crackled back from the grain silos across the street.
"Sniper team is engaging... hold your position!"
BOOM! BOOM!
From across the street, Vincent’s heavy-caliber anti-materiel rifle barked twice with earth-shattering authority.
Through the smoky haze of the basement, I watched the heavy steel shipping container doors at the back of the bunker violently buckle inward as Vincent’s armor-piercing rounds punched straight through the metal and the men hiding behind them.
The mercenary advance stalled instantly, shattered by the devastating overwatch fire raining down from the silos.
"Push forward! Flush them out!" I shouted into the tactical channel, signaling the rest of our strike team holding the bulkhead stairs.
Ten Moretti operatives poured down the concrete steps in a textbook wedge formation, their suppressed carbines systematically cutting off every escape route across the basement floor.
Within four minutes, the firefight was over.
Thirteen foreign mercenaries lay neutralized across the concrete bunker. Not a single Moretti operative had sustained a fatal injury.
I walked slowly across the blood-stained floor, stepping over discarded tactical vests and smoking shell casings toward the back shipping container tunnel where the enemy had originated.
Inside the container, there was no stash of weapons, no cartel leader, and no operational headquarters.
There was only a single, glowing computer monitor sitting atop a bare wooden crate, displaying a live webcam feed of my own Beverly Hills nursery.

And typed across the center of the monitor in bold white text was a single sentence:
“YOU SAVED THE PAWN, ADRIEN. BUT THE KING’S GAMBIT HAS ALREADY BEGUN.”
