Chapter 12 - The Trap at the Port of Newark

A thick, freezing fog rolled across the industrial harbor of Newark, swallowing the colossal silhouettes of towering cargo cranes.
It was past two in the morning, and the rhythmic lapping of black water against the wooden piers sounded like a ticking clock.
A convoy of three unmarked black delivery vans slipped through the side entrance of Terminal 4, their headlights extinguished to avoid notice.
Victor Vance’s elite mercenary unit stepped out onto the damp concrete, heavily armed with tactical carbines and thermal scanners.
Sebastian followed closely behind them, shivering uncontrollably inside his thin jacket and clutching a forged security pass Vance had handed him.
"The manifest we stole from Cave Point says Container 408 contains Castellano's biometric authorization chips for the entire Atlantic shipping network," the mercenary leader whispered.
Sebastian smiled nervously in the darkness, already dreaming of the luxury penthouse and sports car he would buy with his payoff.
The mercenary team swiftly cut through the heavy chain-link perimeter fence and approached the designated shipping container resting in the shadows.
With a sharp hiss from an industrial hydraulic cutter, the steel padlock snapped and clattered against the wet ground.
The leader wrenched the heavy steel container doors open, aiming his tactical flashlight into the dark interior.
Instead of rows of biometric microchips and financial servers, the interior of the container was completely empty, save for a single folding metal chair.
Sitting in the center of the container was Luca Castellano, wearing a tailored black overcoat and holding a silver lighter that clicked open with a sharp, metallic ring.
"You are three minutes late, Mr. Vance’s cleanup crew," Luca said, his voice cold and terrifyingly calm in the echoing metal space.
Before the mercenaries could even raise their weapons, towering halogen spotlights erupted from the surrounding crane towers, blinding everyone on the pier.
Dozens of armed Castellano enforcers, backed by federal customs enforcement tactical units, emerged from the surrounding containers with weapons drawn.
"Federal agents! Drop your weapons and get on the ground immediately!" an amplified voice boomed across the harbor terminal.
The mercenaries instantly realized they had walked into an inescapable fortress and dropped their firearms onto the concrete.
Sebastian screamed in sheer terror, dropping to his knees and pressing his face against the cold, filthy puddle beneath him.
Norah stepped out from behind a line of tactical vehicles, accompanied by the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York.
She held a waterproof digital tablet displaying the real-time GPS tracking data that Vance’s mercenaries had followed straight to the pier.
"You followed the exact digital breadcrumbs I planted in the Cave Point database three days ago," Norah announced, her voice echoing over the docks.
"The moment Margaret Thorne forwarded that altered manifest to Victor Vance, every single communication was intercepted by federal authorities."
Luca stepped down from the container, walking slowly past the line of disarmed mercenaries until he stopped directly over the sobbing Sebastian.
"You came to sell out the woman who kept you fed for five years, Sebastian," Luca said, his voice dripping with disgust.
Sebastian clutched at Luca’s polished leather shoes, weeping hysterically and begging for mercy.
"Please, Luca, it wasn't my idea! Victor Vance forced me to do this! He threatened to kill me if I didn't help him!" Sebastian wailed.
Luca didn't even bother to look down at the groveling coward; he simply turned to the federal customs agent beside him.

"Take this pathetic vermin away," Luca commanded quietly.
"Charge him with federal conspiracy, maritime espionage, and attempted grand larceny."
