Chapter 10 - Secrets Buried Beneath the Skin

The heavy industrial locks of the panic room engaged with three distinct, heavy mechanical clangs.

Outside, the muffled sounds of high-caliber rifles and shouting faded into a dull, harmless rumble against the foot-thick reinforced titanium walls.

Inside, the emergency backup lights cast an eerie amber glow over the concrete chamber.

Luca lay slumped against a stack of supply crates, his breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps as blood pooled beneath his lower back.

Eleanor was kneeling beside him, her hands covered in his blood, her face a mask of frantic, silent torment as she pressed a sterile gauze pad against the entry wound.

"Mom... I’m alright," Luca lied through gritted teeth, his face deathly pale. "The bullet... it passed through the flank... missed the spine."

Sophie stood in the corner, her hands covering her mouth, silent tears streaming down her pale cheeks.

I knelt beside Luca, ripping open a trauma medical kit from the wall bracket, my hands working on pure adrenaline and maternal survival instinct.

"Keep pressing right there, Mrs. Moretti," I instructed, using firm, calm sign gestures with one hand while applying an emergency clotting agent with the other.

"He is losing too much blood, but the main femoral artery isn't severed."

Luca looked up at me, a faint, agonizing smile touching his bloodless lips.

"You're... surprisingly calm around bullet wounds, Claire," he whispered, a grimace of intense pain twisting his features as the clotting agent took hold.

"When you spend seven years surviving in the worst neighborhoods of Chicago with a deaf child, you learn how to patch up broken bodies without panicking," I replied, wrapping a tight compression bandage around his torso.

As I pulled his torn sweater aside to secure the second strap, my fingers brushed against a hard, metallic object tucked inside an internal pocket of his body armor.

It wasn't a magazine or a weapon.

It was an antique silver locket, tarnished with age, hanging from a broken silver chain.

The latch was loose, and as the fabric shifted, the locket clicked open.

Inside were two tiny, faded photographs.

On the left was a young Eleanor holding baby Luca.

On the right was a photograph of a smiling young woman with familiar green eyes and wavy auburn hair—a photograph of my own mother, Margaret Dawson, holding me when I was an infant.

I froze, the medical shears slipping from my fingers and clattering against the concrete floor.

Eleanor’s eyes followed mine, landing on the silver locket resting against Luca’s chest.

Her trembling hands rose into the amber light, moving slowly, deliberately, carrying the weight of a secret kept buried for over thirty years.

Margaret was my younger sister, Eleanor signed, each gesture hitting me like a physical blow to the heart.

Your mother... was my sister.

I fell back onto the floor, staring from Eleanor’s wrinkled, tearful face to Luca’s pale, wounded expression.

"What... what are you saying?" I whispered, my voice completely vanishing into the silence of the bunker.

"My mother died when I was twelve... she told me she had no living family left in Illinois."

Luca closed his eyes, taking a painful, shuddering breath before speaking.

"Thirty years ago, our grandfather ran this syndicate with an iron fist," Luca explained, his voice weak but clear.

"When your mother, Margaret, fell in love with a civilian schoolteacher—your father—she refused to be married off to a corrupt politician to secure our family's shipping ports."

"Grandfather disowned her, erased her name from the family records, and forbade my mother from ever contacting her again under penalty of death."

Eleanor leaned forward, taking both of my trembling hands into her bloodstained palms, pressing them against her heart.

I broke the family vow, Eleanor signed with desperate love.

When my sister became sick, I secretly paid her hospital bills through an anonymous foundation.

When you gave birth to Sophie, I watched you from a distance in a parked car across from the clinic.

I wanted to bring you home so many times, Claire... but this life, this violence... it destroys everyone who touches it.

I wanted you to be free.

That is why Marcus targeted you.

The pieces of the horrific puzzle finally slammed together with terrifying, crystalline clarity.

"Patricia didn't pick my agency file at random that morning," I gasped, the cold realization washing over me.

"No," Luca said, his eyes burning with fury even through his physical agony.

"Marcus found Eleanor's private will three months ago."

"My mother left half of the family’s legitimate offshore trusts directly to Margaret Dawson’s heirs—to you and Sophie."

"Marcus didn't just want me dead to take over the syndicate."

"He had Patricia summon you to this house on purpose, intending to frame you for my mother's death or eliminate you both in one clean sweep, leaving him as the sole legal beneficiary of the entire Moretti fortune."

A heavy, metallic thud resonated from the outer entrance of the panic room, followed by the mechanical whine of the manual security override code being entered from the exterior panel.

Matteo’s voice crackled through the wall intercom, urgent and breathless.

"Boss! Boss, open up! We neutralized the shoreline hit squad, but you need to see who just walked through the front gates with federal credentials!"

May you like

Luca leaned his head back against the concrete wall, a cold, dangerous fire reigniting in his eyes.

"Open the door, Claire," Luca commanded softly.
