Chapter 8 - Shadows from the Past

Two weeks passed, and life on the Moretti estate shifted like the turning of a long-frozen season.
The gloomy, heavy atmosphere that once choked the mansion was replaced by the sound of Sophie’s laughter echoing through the manicured rose gardens.
Eleanor was making remarkable progress; with daily physical therapy and freedom from Vance's sedatives, she had regained partial mobility in her right leg and was already using a walking cane inside the house.
Every morning, I accompanied Eleanor to the sunroom, where she dictated letters, managed her private charitable foundation, and helped Sophie with her visual reading exercises.
Luca joined us every single evening for dinner, shedding his dark overcoat at the front entrance and leaving his syndicate business outside the heavy front doors.
He was learning sign language at an astonishing pace, practicing new words every night with Sophie over dessert.
Yet, beneath the surface of this newfound peace, dark currents were beginning to stir.
On a crisp Tuesday afternoon, while Eleanor was resting upstairs, Matteo requested my presence in Luca's private executive library.
When I stepped through the double oak doors, the tension in the room was thick enough to choke on.
Luca was standing behind his mahogany desk, surrounded by surveillance photographs and printed bank wire statements.
"Close the door, Claire," Luca said quietly, his brow furrowed with deep concern.
I shut the door and walked toward the desk, noticing a familiar name typed in bold at the top of a legal dossier.
Arthur Dawson.
My breath caught in my throat, a wave of cold nausea washing over me so violently that I had to catch the edge of a leather chair for support.
"Where did you get that name?" I whispered, my voice trembling.
"Matteo runs comprehensive background checks on everyone living on this perimeter," Luca explained gently, stepping around the desk to stand near me.
"It’s not just protocol, Claire—it’s survival."
"Arthur Dawson was your late husband, wasn't he?"
I nodded slowly, wrapping my arms tightly around myself as memories I had spent seven years burying clawed their way back to the surface.
"Arthur died in a car crash seven years ago, right before Sophie turned two," I said, struggling to keep my composure.
"At least, that's what the police report said."
Luca pulled a glossy black-and-white photograph from the folder and slid it across the mahogany surface toward me.
It showed a man in his late thirties with dark hair, a jagged scar across his right cheek, standing outside an upscale casino in Montreal.
The photo had been taken three days ago.
"Your husband didn't die in an accident, Claire," Luca said softly, his dark eyes watching my reaction with profound empathy.
"Arthur Dawson was an undercover forensic accountant working for the United States Treasury Department."
"Seven years ago, he was embedded inside the Rossi family’s money-laundering network."
"When Salvatore Rossi discovered Arthur was leaking ledger copies to federal investigators, Arthur staged his own death to protect you and Sophie from execution."
I stared at the photograph, the room spinning around me.
Arthur was alive.
The man whose funeral I had attended beside an empty casket, the man whose absence had condemned me and Sophie to years of poverty, eviction notices, and scraping pennies together in moldy studio apartments—was alive.
"Why are you showing me this now?" I choked out, tears of betrayal and confusion burning my eyes.
"Because Salvatore Rossi is desperate after what happened at the harbor two weeks ago," Luca replied, his jaw hardening into granite.
"Salvatore lost his supply lines, his territory was restricted, and federal agents are closing in on his remaining shell corporations."
"He found out Arthur is alive in Canada, and he knows Arthur took an encrypted backup drive containing thirty years of Rossi financial crimes."
Luca reached out, his hand hovering near my shoulder before gently resting on my arm, offering steady, unyielding warmth.
"Salvatore Rossi believes that Arthur left a physical copy of that encryption key with you before he vanished."
"His men are scouring Chicago right now, searching for the widow and the deaf daughter of Arthur Dawson."
"They don't know you’re living inside these gates yet, but they are tearing through every agency, every slumlord ledger, and every clinic you ever visited."
"Claire, you didn't just save my mother’s life that morning."
May you like
"You brought yourself and Sophie straight into the safest stronghold in this entire state."
Before I could answer, a red emergency strobe light flashed silently on the library wall, followed by the muffled chime of the estate perimeter alarm.
