Chapter 6 - The Price of Blood and Silence

The freezing draft off Lake Michigan rattled the metal siding of Warehouse 14 like a relentless drum.
Marcus Moretti dropped to both knees, the cold concrete biting into his designer slacks.
His hands were trembling so violently that he could barely keep them clasped behind his head.
"Luca, please... listen to me, we share the same blood!" Marcus pleaded, tears of sheer panic cutting tracks through the grime on his face.
"Blood?" Luca repeated, his tone so devoid of warmth it made the surrounding guards shudder.
"My mother wiped your nose when your own father drank himself to death in the alleys of Bridgeport."
"She paid your tuition at Northwestern, she gave you an executive suite in our corporate tower, and you repaid her by poisoning her IV lines and planning her suffocation."
Luca did not raise his voice; he didn't need to.
The absolute, terrifying authority radiating from him pinned everyone in the room to the ground.
Salvatore Rossi stood frozen under the crimson dot of the sniper rifle trained squarely on his skull.
"Moretti," Salvatore spoke up, his gravelly voice tight with barely concealed dread.
"This was business."
"Your cousin approached me with manifests, bank routing numbers, and guarantees from your own security detail."
"I didn't break our peace treaty—Marcus told me you were already compromised by the feds."
Luca turned his gaze toward the rival boss, the barrel of his Kimber .45 remaining firmly pressed against Marcus's temple.
"You stood in my mother's bedroom, Salvatore."
"You stood over an invalid woman who could not scream for help and agreed to split her family’s legacy before her body went cold."
"That stops being business."
"That becomes an unforgivable sin against the very ground you walk on."
Luca gestured with two fingers toward Matteo.
"Strip Salvatore of his coat, his phone, and his dignity."
"Escort him to the border of Cook County."
"If I ever catch him, his soldiers, or his shadow north of the Chicago River again, I will personally level every business his syndicate owns to ash."
Salvatore took a deep breath, bowing his head in bitter, humiliated submission.
He knew he was walking away with his life only because Luca’s primary hunger for vengeance belonged entirely to the traitor kneeling in front of him.
Two heavily armed operators grabbed Salvatore by his shoulders and dragged him backward into the darkness of the industrial yard.
Now, only Marcus remained in the center of the ring of blinding floodlights.
"What... what are you going to do to me, Luca?" Marcus choked out, his chest heaving with terrified sobs.
"Death is far too clean for you, Marcus," Luca said softly, finally pulling the barrel away from his cousin's forehead.
"You wanted to put my mother in a cage."
"You wanted her to spend her final years staring at a gray wall, trapped in an inescapable silence, stripped of every cent and every dignity."
Luca stepped back, signaling Matteo and three tactical operatives forward.
"Marcus Moretti has officially resigned from all corporate boards and family trusts tonight."
"Take him to the private holding facility in the limestone quarries down south."
"No visitors, no daylight, and not a single word spoken to him for the rest of his miserable days."
"Let him discover what true silence feels like."
Marcus screamed as the guards hoisted him off the floor, his shrieks echoing helplessly against the rusted rafters until the warehouse doors slammed shut behind him.
Luca stood alone in the center of the vast concrete space for several seconds, his chest rising and falling in heavy, shuddering breaths.
He wiped a smear of soot and rain from his cheek, holstered his firearm, and looked up at the ceiling.
"Get the cars ready," Luca commanded Matteo through his comms headset.

"I need to go home."
"My mother has been waiting for me for eighteen months, and I will not make her wait another minute."
