Chapter 4 - The Trap is Sprung

Within three minutes, the heavy oak doors of the master bedroom flew open, and three imposing men in black tactical gear entered the room.

Leading them was Matteo, Luca’s right-hand enforcer, a scarred man with cold, calculating eyes who moved with the silent grace of a seasoned soldier.

He took one look at Patricia weeping on the floor, the splintered nightstand, and the white roses scattered on the vanity, immediately understanding that an internal war had broken out.

"Boss?" Matteo questioned, his hand resting instinctively on the holstered firearm at his hip.

"Search Patricia’s quarters immediately," Luca commanded, never taking his eyes off the trembling housekeeper.

"Check her floorboards, her vanity, and her personal safe."

"Look for bank routing slips, cash bundles, and any burner phones."

Patricia fell to her knees, crawling toward Luca’s polished leather shoes, her hands clasped in frantic prayer.

"Mr. Moretti, please! I swear on my mother’s soul, Marcus forced me into this!" she wailed, tears streaming down her makeup-smeared face.

"He threatened to kill my brother if I didn't keep you away from Mrs. Eleanor!"

"He said you were losing your mind and running the family into ruin!"

"You dare speak my mother’s name with those filthy lips?" Luca asked softly, stepping back to avoid her touch as if she were a carrier of the plague.

"You let my mother rot in her own tears for eighteen months."

"You stood by while my cousin plotted to spill my blood and smother the woman who gave me life."

Matteo stepped forward, hauling Patricia up by the back of her uniform collar with effortless brutality.

Within seconds, her hands were secured behind her back with heavy industrial zip-ties.

"What do we do with her, boss?" Matteo asked.

"Take her to the wine cellar beneath the carriage house," Luca replied coldly.

"Strip her of every device."

"If she screams, make sure the sound doesn't reach my mother's ears."

As Matteo dragged the shrieking housekeeper out into the hallway, Luca turned his attention toward me.

My heart slammed against my ribs like a caged bird.

I was an outsider, a temporary maid who had just witnessed the deepest, most dangerous internal conspiracy of Chicago's criminal underworld.

In films and urban legends, witnesses to mafia secrets were never permitted to walk out the front door alive.

I took an instinctive step backward, my back hitting the solid wood of the wardrobe.

"Mr. Moretti... I swear I didn't see anything, I won't say a word to anyone," I stammered, my voice trembling with raw maternal panic.

"Please... I have an eight-year-old daughter waiting for me at home."

"Her name is Sophie, she’s deaf, and she has nobody else in this world."

Eleanor immediately struck the armrest of her wheelchair, her eyes blazing with fierce reprimand toward her son.

Luca! she signed with sharp, cutting motions.

Do not threaten this girl!

She gave me back my voice when your own men buried me alive!

If you harm a single hair on her head, I will never look at your face again!

Luca watched his mother's hands, then looked over at me, the terrifying hardness in his features softening slightly.

"Translate what she just said," Luca demanded quietly.

I swallowed hard, keeping my hands up in clear view.

"She... she told you not to threaten me," I whispered.

"She said that if you harm me, she will never look at your face again."

A faint, ghost of a self-deprecating smile touched Luca's lips, though his eyes remained shadowed with profound sorrow.

"I don't murder innocent mothers who save my family, Claire," Luca said, his voice surprisingly gentle.

He walked over to the vanity table, picked up the empty picture frame Patricia had given me, and tossed it into the fireplace where a low flame crackled.

"You heard what my mother signed," Luca continued, turning to face me fully.

"My cousin Marcus and Salvatore Rossi believe I am walking blindly into an ambush at Calumet Harbor tonight at midnight."

"They think my mother is a brain-dead mute who will be dead before tomorrow's sunrise."

He stepped closer, pulling a heavy gold signet ring from his pinky finger and setting it gently on the table beside Eleanor.

"They orchestrated an eighteen-month silence to break my spirit and blind my sight."

"Tonight, they expect an execution."

"Instead, they are going to receive an absolute reckoning."

Eleanor reached out, grabbing Luca’s sleeve, her fingers spelling out a desperate, warning plea.

Marcus has half the harbor guards on his payroll, Luca, she signed urgently.

Do not go alone.

It is an ambush designed to leave no survivors.

Luca leaned down, pressing a warm, lingering kiss to his mother's forehead, closing his eyes as if drawing strength from her very breath.

"I am not going alone, Mom," Luca whispered against her gray hair.

"And I am not walking into their ambush."

He stood upright, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that commanded absolute obedience and trust.

"Claire, your shift at this house was supposed to end at four o'clock today."

"I am offering you ten thousand dollars in cash right now, plus full protection for you and your daughter."

"I need you to stay by my mother's side until the sun rises tomorrow."

May you like

"You are the only person in this entire mansion whose hands she trusts."

"Will you stay and give my mother her voice while I go finish this war?"
