Chapter 13 - The Broadcast from the Deep

The emergency bunker beneath the southern carriage house smelled of damp earth, battery acid, and old paper.
A bank of twenty military-grade computer monitors glowed against the concrete wall, displaying live exterior cameras from the perimeter fence.
What we saw on those screens turned our blood to ice.
Three matte-black armored tactical carriers had smashed through the wrought-iron gates, deploying dozens of men dressed in sterile black tactical uniforms bearing no badges or official identification.
Miller had not brought federal agents executing a legal warrant; he had brought private black-ops contractors operating under the cover of a falsified domestic terrorism task force.
They moved with ruthless military efficiency, laying down sustained automatic fire across the courtyard, suppressing Luca’s defensive positions behind the stone pillars of the grand portico.
On Screen 4, I saw Luca leaning out from behind a marble archway, his shoulder heavily bandaged, firing his semi-automatic rifle with lethal precision, dropping two advancing contractors before falling back behind the reinforced double doors.
"Arthur, the feed!" I yelled, pulling Eleanor’s wheelchair directly in front of the high-definition broadcast terminal mounted above the central console.
Arthur’s fingers flew across the keyboard, typing lines of decryption code from the titanium drive.
"The local networks are completely jammed by Miller’s mobile signal-dampeners!" Arthur gritted out, sweat dripping from his forehead onto the illuminated keys.
"I can't reach the Chicago affiliates!"
Eleanor leaned forward, her silver cane clattering to the floor as she grabbed Arthur’s forearm with surprising strength.
She pointed directly at the satellite uplink status icon flashing amber in the corner of the display.
The Swiss holding server, she signed with lightning speed.
Margaret and I had a mutual emergency relay set up thirty years ago through the Geneva bank.
It bypasses North American communications relays entirely!
I translated her frantic words at maximum volume: "Bypass the domestic relays! Route the uplink through the Geneva holding server!"
Arthur’s eyes flared with sudden realization.
"The international banking line... Miller can't jam a direct transatlantic military satellite channel!"
He slammed his hand onto the execution key.
The amber light on the main terminal snapped into brilliant, unyielding green.
"We’re live," Arthur gasped, his voice cracking. "The signal is bouncing directly into the international press pool and the Inspector General's office in Washington."
I knelt beside Eleanor, adjusting the camera angle until her face filled the entire frame.
She looked directly into the high-definition lens, her gray hair slightly disheveled, her features carved from the absolute dignity of a matriarch who had survived betrayal, poison, and enforced silence.
I raised my hands beside her shoulders, serving as her living, breathing voice before the entire world.
My name is Eleanor Moretti, Eleanor signed, her movements broad, rhythmic, and commanding.
"My name is Eleanor Moretti," I translated into the broadcast microphone, my voice ringing clear and steady through the bunker.
For eighteen months, I was kept prisoner inside my own home by a criminal conspiracy involving Marcus Moretti, Salvatore Rossi, and Assistant Deputy Director Thomas Miller.
They poisoned my veins, forged my signatures, and attempted to slaughter my son to seize control of our legitimate trusts.
Eleanor reached into her robe, pulling out the folded yellow paper containing the seven names, holding it directly against the glass of the lens.
Here are the dates.
Here are the wire transfer numbers.
And as I sign these words to you, Deputy Director Miller’s illegal hit squad is currently attempting to murder my son inside this house to ensure our silence.
On the security monitors behind us, we watched the immediate, devastating impact of her words.
Two miles away at the Highland Park marina, local Cook County sheriff's cruisers and state police interceptors—alerted by the international emergency broadcast—began flooding toward the estate perimeter with their sirens wailing like a thousand banshees.

Miller’s illegal operation was no longer happening in the dark.
The bright, burning light of public exposure had just fallen squarely upon his head.
