Chapter 12 - The Forgotten Ledger and a Father's Sacrifice

Luca stepped closer, his large fingers taking the aging envelope from my hand with deliberate care.
He slid the letter out, his eyes scanning the familiar handwriting of his late father, Lorenzo Moretti.
As he read the words, his jaw tightened into a rigid line of muscle, a profound wave of realization washing over his face.
“Thomas Bennett,” Luca murmured, tasting the name on his tongue as the puzzle pieces snapped violently into place.
“Your father.”
“Yes,” I answered, my voice barely above a whisper.
“He never told me he worked for your family, Mr. Moretti... he only ever spoke of how the corporate world broke his health and took everything we had.”
Luca folded the letter slowly, placing it down beside the archival box.
“Your father didn't just work for my family, Julia,” Luca explained, his voice softening with deep respect.
“Twenty-five years ago, a faction of corrupt executives tried to embezzle millions from the Moretti shipping lines using forged auditing reports.”
“My father discovered the plot too late to stop the initial bleed, but your father—then a brilliant young forensic accountant—worked in secret for three sleepless weeks to trace every single dollar.”
“He exposed the traitors, saved the family assets from total federal seizure, and barely escaped with his life when their enforcers tried to silence him.”
Tears welled up in my eyes as I listened to the hidden history of a man I had only known as a tired, sick father struggling to pay heating bills.
“Why did my father live in such poverty if he saved an empire?” I asked, my voice cracking with emotion.
“Because the men he exposed swore vengeance,” Luca replied grimly, stepping closer to my desk.
“My father gave him a new identity, relocated him away from Chicago, and provided a quiet pension to keep him safe from surviving syndicate remnants.”
“And Vanessa’s associates were the ones behind that embezzlement scheme?” I asked, connecting the dots.
“Some of them were,” Luca confirmed, his gray eyes flashing with cold steel.
“Vanessa didn't just randomly target this estate five years ago; she was the daughter of one of the corrupt executives your father helped put out of business.”
The sheer magnitude of the generational vendetta hit me like a physical wave.
Vanessa’s entire campaign wasn't just a social climb; it was a calculated revenge plot designed to finish what her family started decades ago.
Luca leaned down slightly, resting his hands on the polished wood of my desk, bringing his face level with mine.
“Your family bled for the Moretti dynasty once, Julia,” Luca said softly, his voice carrying an unbreakable vow.
“And now, protecting your family is my absolute priority.”
Before I could answer, the secure intercom phone on the side of my desk buzzed shrilly, breaking the intense silence of the library.
Luca straightened up instantly, reaching over to press the speaker button.
“Report,” Luca commanded coldly.
“Mr. Moretti,” the head of estate security spoke through the static.
“We have a situation at the front security gates.”
“Explain,” Luca instructed, his tone dropping into a dangerous register.
“A representative for Marcus Vance and Vanessa Bellini has just attempted to breach the outer perimeter with a subpoena, demanding immediate access to the estate archives.”
Luca’s expression darkened into an absolute storm.

“Detain them immediately,” Luca ordered sharply.
“And bring whoever sent them straight to the courtyard.”
