Chapter 8 - Whispers in the Guest Wing

The third-floor guest suite was bathed in a warm, gentle glow from the bedside lamp, casting soft shadows across the ivory walls.
I lay resting against the plush linen pillows, a cool medical compress gently resting across my swollen left cheekbone.
The throbbing beneath my eyebrow had subsided into a dull, manageable ache, thanks to the medication Dr. Harris had administered earlier.
Yet my mind was racing at a fever pitch, replaying the terrifying confrontation in the dining room and wondering what fate awaited me at the estate.
Would I still have my job by morning?
Would Luca Moretti banish me alongside Vanessa to avoid any messy reminders of the night's scandals?
A soft, deliberate knock echoed against the heavy oak door of the suite.
Before I could formulate a reply or sit up straight, the door slowly swung open.
Luca Moretti stepped into the room, his towering frame instantly filling the quiet space with an undeniable aura of raw power.
He had removed his suit jacket, his crisp white shirt unbuttoned at the collar, making him look less like an untouchable mob boss and more like a mortal man carrying the weight of the world.
“Mr. Moretti,” I whispered, immediately attempting to push myself upright against the pillows.
“Stay down, Julia,” Luca instructed gently, crossing the room in a few long strides to adjust the blankets over my shoulders.
His touch was surprisingly tender, completely at odds with the ruthless reputation that preceded him in the Chicago underworld.
“How is your cheek feeling?” he asked, his gray eyes searching my face with genuine concern.
“Much better, sir, the pain is fading,” I replied softly, unable to maintain direct eye contact for long.
“The party is over, Vanessa has been permanently removed from the estate, and her assets are currently being frozen by my legal team,” Luca stated quietly, as if discussing the weather.
My breath caught in my throat, my eyes widening in sheer disbelief.
“Removed... from the estate?” I echoed.
“She will never set foot on Moretti property again, nor will she ever have the financial means to threaten you or your family ever in your lifetime,” Luca promised, his voice carrying an absolute, unbreakable vow.
He pulled a small velvet chair closer to the edge of the mattress and sat down, resting his elbows on his knees.
“You risked your livelihood, your safety, and your physical well-being to protect an elderly woman you barely knew today, Julia,” Luca noted, his gaze piercing straight through my defenses.
“Why?”
I swallowed hard, looking down at my hands resting nervously against the white cotton blanket.
“Because nobody deserves to be thrown out into the freezing rain like garbage, Mr. Moretti,” I answered honestly, my voice steadying.
“My father always taught me that a person's true character is judged by how they treat the defenseless when nobody important is watching.”
Luca stared at me for several long, silent seconds, a faint, rare smile touching the corners of his lips.
“Your father raised a remarkable woman, Julia,” Luca murmured softly.
“From this moment forward, your role at this estate changes; you are no longer a maid subject to arbitrary cruelty.”
I looked up quickly, a knot of confusion forming in my chest.
“What do you mean, sir?”
“I mean you will oversee the estate's private archives and historical preservation, working directly from the main library with a salary that ensures your family's security permanently,” Luca declared firmly.
Tears sprang to my eyes once more, but this time they were born of profound gratitude and overwhelming relief.
“I... I don't know how to thank you, Mr. Moretti,” I choked out, wiping a tear from my cheek.

“You don't need to thank me, Julia,” Luca replied, standing up slowly and smoothing his shirt cuffs.
“Get some proper rest tonight, because tomorrow we begin rebuilding what was broken in this house.”
