Chapter 10 - The Final Confession in the Glasshouse

The conservatory was bathed in brilliant morning sunlight streaming downward through the vaulted glass ceiling, warming the damp earth and blooming ferns.

The air smelled rich with the fragrance of lemon blossoms, wet soil, and fresh morning dew.

Vanessa Bellini stood near the center stone bench, looking utterly hollowed out, her elegant red silk gown stained with mud from the previous night's torrential rain.

Her hair was disheveled, her expensive diamond earrings removed, and her arrogant facade completely stripped away by reality.

She heard the heavy footsteps approaching along the tile pathway and slowly turned her head to face him.

Luca Moretti stopped a few feet away, his cold gray eyes mirroring the calm, relentless force of an executioner.

“You brought me back to the exact scene of the crime,” Vanessa whispered, her voice brittle and cracked.

“Why, Luca? To humiliate me further before you cast me out into the streets?”

“I brought you back here because this is where the web of lies finally began to unravel,” Luca answered evenly.

“Twelve years ago, you tried to bleed my father dry with blackmail, and five years ago, you engineered a calculated infiltration to seize everything my family built.”

Vanessa let out a harsh, broken laugh, hugging her arms tightly across her chest.

“I only wanted what I deserved, Luca!” she snapped, a flash of her old venom returning briefly.

“Your family sits atop an empire built on shadows and violence, while I had to claw my way up from the gutter with my bare hands.”

“You had intelligence, ambition, and opportunity, Vanessa,” Luca retorted, his voice cutting like a razor.

“Instead of building something legitimate, you chose the path of parasites, blackmail, and cruelty.”

“And what about your precious little maid, Julia?” Vanessa sneered bitterly.

“You think she actually cares about you? She's just another poor girl waiting for a handout from a powerful man.”

“Julia has more integrity in her little finger than you possessed in your entire body,” Luca stated with absolute conviction.

“She protected an elderly woman at the cost of her own safety, while you hid behind threats and intimidation.”

Vanessa stared at her reflection in the glass windows, realizing with absolute finality that every bridge she had burned could never be rebuilt.

“It’s over, Vanessa,” Luca concluded, turning his back on her.

“Your bags are packed at the front gates, your corporate accounts are frozen, and your name is blacklisted from every civilized circle in this city.”

“You can leave Chicago by noon, or you can face federal prosecution for the financial fraud documented in my father's ledger.”

Vanessa did not utter another word, her shoulders slumping in absolute defeat as she turned and walked slowly toward the garden exit.

Luca watched her go, feeling a massive weight lift from his shoulders as the final shadow of the past faded away.

He turned around and walked out of the conservatory, making his way back toward the main house where a new, honest chapter of his life was quietly waiting to begin.CHAPTER 11 — The Secrets of the Library Archives

The massive mahogany doors of the estate library stood wide open, welcoming the soft morning light.

Rows of floor-to-ceiling bookshelves lined the walls, filled with centuries of leather-bound volumes, legal ledgers, and historical records.

I stepped across the polished hardwood floor, my hand lightly brushing the spine of an antique dictionary.

The heavy bruising on my left cheek had begun to fade into a faint yellowish hue, thanks to the continuous care and top-tier medication Dr. Harris had provided.

My vision was entirely clear, sharp, and steady for the first time in months.

No more double vision.

No more blurred edges of crystal chandeliers.

No more living in constant fear of sudden shadows.

My new position as the estate’s archivist and historical preservationist felt like stepping into an entirely different universe.

Gone were the endless hours of scrubbing marble floors, carrying heavy silver trays, and enduring silent humiliations in the service pantry.

Now, my desk sat directly beneath the grand arched stained-glass window, surrounded by priceless documents waiting to be organized and cataloged.

I settled into the plush leather chair, pulling the first archival box toward me.

It was labeled with faded ink: Moretti Estate — 1998 to 2004.

I lifted the lid carefully, releasing a dry, papery scent of old parchment and fading history.

Inside lay stacks of old photographs, employee rosters, architectural blueprints, and handwritten correspondence.

As I sorted through the top layer, a small, cream-colored envelope slipped from between two ledger pages and fluttered down onto my lap.

I picked it up, my brow furrowing in curiosity.

Unlike the business documents, this envelope bore no official stamp or formal heading.

Written across the front in a hurried, masculine handwriting was a single name: For Thomas Bennett.

My heart skipped a beat, the breath catching instantly in my throat.

Thomas Bennett.

That was my father’s name.

My hands trembled slightly as I flipped the envelope over, noticing the broken wax seal on the back.

My father had never mentioned working for the Moretti family during his younger years.

In fact, whenever anyone asked about his past career before his health declined, he always changed the subject with a weary sigh.

Slowly, with trembling fingers, I pulled the folded letter from inside the aging paper.

The ink was slightly faded, but the words were sharp, clear, and unmistakable.

“Thomas, if you are reading this, it means the corporate board has successfully pushed through the acquisition of the northern shipping docks.”

“You risked everything to protect my family's financial integrity, exposing the fraudulent audits before they could destroy us from within.”

“I cannot publicly reinstate you without triggering a violent gang war within the syndicate, but know this: the Moretti debt to the Bennett family will never be forgotten.”

— Lorenzo Moretti.

Luca’s father.

My eyes stared blindly at the signature at the bottom of the page, the world around me spinning into a slow-motion blur.

My father hadn't just been an ordinary worker; he had been a loyal financial auditor who had risked his life to save the Moretti empire from internal sabotage decades ago.

And Vanessa Bellini’s father—or her associates—had likely been the very people trying to dismantle it.

Before I could process the staggering implications of the letter, the heavy library doors opened softly behind me.

Footsteps echoed across the wooden floor, calm, measured, and instantly recognizable.

I turned my head quickly, tucking the letter beneath a stack of archival folders.

Luca Moretti stood near the threshold, dressed in a tailored charcoal suit, his gray eyes scanning the sunlit library before landing on me.

“How are you settling into your new environment, Julia?” Luca asked, his voice low and rich as he walked slowly toward my desk.

“I... I am still trying to take it all in, Mr. Moretti,” I stammered, my fingers gripping the edge of the desk.

Luca stopped a few feet away, his gaze noticing the subtle tension in my posture and the way my eyes avoided his.

“You found something in those boxes,” Luca stated, not as a question, but as an absolute certainty.

I looked up into his sharp, intelligent eyes, realizing there was no point in hiding the discovery.

I reached down, pulled the cream-colored envelope from beneath the folders, and extended it across the desk toward him.

“I found this,” I whispered.
