Chapter 13 - The Desperate Attempt at the Gate

The autumn twilight cast long, eerie shadows across the sprawling front lawns of the Moretti estate as night began to settle over Chicago.
Inside the warm, wood-paneled study, Bruno was curled up soundly on his plush blue blanket directly beside the crackling stone fireplace.
The rhythmic sound of his soft breathing filled the room, bringing a deep, peaceful sense of restoration to a space that had felt cold and sterile just days before.
I sat quietly at the heavy oak desk reviewing the new digital inventory logs for the estate's veterinary supplies when a sharp, frantic buzzing sound interrupted the silence.
It was the intercom connected directly to the main security gatehouse half a mile down the private drive.
I pressed the communication button, wondering who could possibly be arriving unannounced after dark.
"Estate security, state your name and business," I spoke clearly into the microphone.
Static hissed through the tiny speaker for a second before a familiar, high-pitched, hysterical voice pierced the quiet room.
"Open this gate right now, you pathetic little thief!"
Vanessa Bellini's voice shrieked through the intercom, distorted by electronic feedback and raw, unadulterated rage.
"I know you're listening, Emma! You and that ruthless monster stole my life, my reputation, and my future, and I am not leaving here until I get what is owed to me!"
I froze, my hand hovering over the desk as a cold chill ran down my spine.
Before I could reach for the master security alert switch, the heavy study door swung open smoothly.
Luca stepped into the room, having evidently heard the commotion from the adjacent hallway.
His expression was completely calm, devoid of anger, reflecting only a cold, chilling indifference.
"Is that her?" Luca asked quietly, walking over to the desk.
"Yes, Mr. Moretti," I answered, my voice trembling slightly.
"She's demanding entry at the front security gates."
Luca reached out and pressed the master override button on the intercom panel, his voice deep and commanding.
"Vanessa," Luca spoke into the microphone, his tone carrying the weight of an executioner.
"You were given until sundown to clear your belongings from your penthouse and leave the state of Illinois."
"You can't banish me like this, Luca!" Vanessa screamed through the speaker, the sound of pounding fists echoing against the iron security bars.
"I made you relevant in Chicago high society! I built your social circle! Without me, you're just a glorified mobster hiding behind antique furniture!"
"Daniel," Luca called out without breaking eye contact with the intercom speaker.
"Boss," the head of security answered instantly from the hallway doorway.
"Escort our uninvited guest off the perimeter property line," Luca ordered coldly.
"And ensure the local police department executes the active arrest warrants for trespassing, harassment, and federal document forgery that were filed two hours ago."
"Right away, boss," Daniel replied crisply, turning on his heel to dispatch the tactical unit.
Through the security monitor on the desk, we watched as two heavy armored security vehicles converged on the front gates.
Within minutes, flashing red and blue police cruisers arrived from the local precinct, surrounding Vanessa’s silver sports car.
We watched silently on the high-definition screen as local officers placed handcuffs around her wrists, cutting short her frantic, screaming protests before bundling her into the back of a squad car.

The screen flickered back to standard estate surveillance feeds as the police convoy drove away down the dark highway.
The Moretti estate was finally, truly safe.
