Chapter 14 - The Firelight and the Unspoken Promise

The fire crackled softly in the massive stone hearth, casting a warm, flickering amber glow across the dark walnut bookshelves of the study.
Bruno let out a contented snore from his spot on the rug, his paws twitching as he dreamed of chasing rabbits in a long-forgotten field.
I stood near the corner of the mahogany desk, carefully organizing the remaining veterinary supply folders before closing them for the night.
"You can leave those for tomorrow, Emma," a deep, resonant voice broke through the quiet hum of the room.
I looked up to find Luca standing just a few feet away, holding two crystal glasses filled with a smooth, amber-colored vintage bourbon.
He extended one of the glasses toward me, his dark eyes carrying a soft, reflective warmth that I had never seen before.
"I'm quite used to finishing what I start, Mr. Moretti," I replied politely, accepting the glass with a cautious smile.
"Please... call me Luca," he corrected gently, stepping closer to the fireplace and resting his shoulder against the carved stone mantelpiece.
"After everything we've survived this week, 'Mr. Moretti' sounds entirely too formal for someone who saved my family's legacy."
I took a small, hesitant sip of the bourbon, letting the smooth warmth spread across my chest as I stood near the opposite end of the hearth.
"I only did what anyone with a conscience would have done," I said softly, staring down into the golden liquid in my glass.
"Most people with a conscience would have turned a blind eye to avoid losing their livelihood," Luca countered, his gaze fixed intently on my face.
"You risked your safety, your rent money, and your physical well-being to protect an old dog that didn't even belong to you."
"He belonged to your mother," I whispered.
"And he was helpless."
Luca was silent for several long seconds, the crackling of the fire filling the gentle space between us.
"My mother taught me that a man's true character isn't measured by the power he wields over his enemies," Luca said quietly, his voice dropping into a tender, intimate register.
"It's measured by how he treats the most vulnerable creatures in his care."
He turned his head fully toward me, taking a step closer until the distance between us narrowed significantly.
"For eleven months, you walked through my home like a ghost—invisible, overworked, and underappreciated by everyone except the staff," Luca continued, his voice steady and earnest.
"That ends tonight, Emma."
My heart skipped a beat, a sudden, unfamiliar warmth flushing across my cheeks as I looked up into his piercing dark eyes.
"What do you mean?" I breathed out, my voice barely audible above the fire.
May you like
"I mean that I want you to stop hiding in the shadows of this estate," Luca answered, reaching out to gently brush a stray lock of hair away from my forehead with a tenderness that completely took my breath away.
"I want you to stay here—not just as my estate coordinator, but as a true partner in building a home filled with truth, loyalty, and peace."
