Chapter 3 - The Secret Behind the Kennel Gate

The memories of what had transpired just hours before rushed back into my mind with suffocating clarity.
My name is Emma Collins, and while I spent my days cleaning silver and dusting antique portrait frames, my heart belonged to the animals of the estate.
Eleven months of working at the Moretti mansion had taught me one undeniable truth: Luca Moretti was a terrifying man to his enemies, but he held a profound, quiet tenderness for his mother's aging golden retriever.
Bruno was fourteen years old, a magnificent beast whose golden coat had turned frosted silver around his gentle muzzle.
After Luca's mother passed away, Bruno had become the silent guardian of the study, spending his afternoons sleeping peacefully beside the massive stone fireplace.
He was nearly deaf, his hind legs were permanently stiff with arthritis, and every single evening without fail, Luca personally walked down to feed him his prescribed medication tucked inside a piece of boiled chicken.
To touch Bruno was to touch a sacred part of Luca's personal history.
Yet, at four o'clock that very afternoon, the peaceful routine of the estate had been brutally shattered.
I had been folding fresh linens in the rear utility room when I heard frantic, muffled whimpers coming from the courtyard near the kennels.
Peering through the frosted glass window, I saw Vanessa Bellini standing beside a strange, unmarked white van with tinted windows.
A burly man in gray overalls was struggling to drag a heavy metal animal carrier across the concrete slabs.
Inside that cramped cage, old Bruno was frantically scratching at the wire door, his throat producing distressed, whimpering cries that broke my heart.
I had dropped my laundry basket and sprinted out the rear service door, my bare feet hitting the cold stone with urgent momentum.
"What is going on here?" I had demanded, stepping directly between Vanessa and the terrified dog.
"Where are you taking him?"
Vanessa had turned around, her face twisted into an expression of pure venom that I had never seen directed at staff before.
"It is none of your damn business, Emma," she had snapped, her voice dripping with acidic disdain.
"Get back inside before I have security throw you off the property right now."
"Mr. Moretti didn't say anything about moving Bruno!" I had protested, my voice trembling as Bruno pressed his wet nose against the wire mesh, seeking my familiar scent.
"He needs his arthritis medication at six o'clock, and his veterinarian said he cannot handle stress!"
Vanessa had narrowed her eyes, stepping closer to me with a menacing aura.
"Luca is busy with wedding planners and financial advisors all afternoon, and I will not have this stinking, shedding old animal ruining the estate aesthetic before our high-society gala tonight."
She had turned to the stranger in the gray overalls.
"Load him into the van right now, and make sure he is gone before Mr. Moretti finishes his meetings."
I had lunged forward to grab the carrier handle, desperate to pull Bruno back to safety.
"No! You can't do this behind his back!" I had cried out.
Vanessa had reacted with lightning speed, reaching out and grabbing the heavy fabric of my left uniform shoulder with both hands.
With a vicious jerk, she had pulled me backward with all her might, tearing the cotton material from collar to waistline.
I had lost my footing entirely on the slick concrete, my bare shoulder slamming violently against the sharp iron latch of the rear service gate.
A sharp, agonizing tear had ripped across my skin, drawing immediate blood that stained my torn uniform a deep, metallic crimson.
As I lay gasping on the cold ground in a haze of shock and pain, the stranger had hoisted Bruno's cage into the back of the van and slammed the heavy doors shut.
Vanessa had leaned over me, her voice dropping to a low, venomous whisper that froze the blood in my veins.
"Listen to me very carefully, you pathetic little peasant," she had hissed into my ear.
"If you ever say a single word to Luca about what happened here today—if you so much as breathe a hint about Bruno leaving—I will ensure your mother never receives another red cent for her hospital treatments."
"I will blacklist your name across every single estate in Chicago, and you will be starving on the streets by the end of the week."
May you like
"Now get up, clean yourself off, bandage that stupid scratch, and serve dinner tonight with a smile on your face, or God help you."
That was the brutal reality I had carried with me into the grand dining hall—a silent hostage to Vanessa's cruel blackmail, bleeding beneath my clothes while the elite of Chicago toasted to a fraudulent future.
