Chapter 11 - The Fractured Syndicate and the Board’s Ultimatum

The news of Marco Moretti’s federal indictment tore through the underground maritime corridors like a devastating tsunami.

By dawn, emergency sirens and flashing red lights had completely cleared from the harbor docks, leaving behind only the cold ocean mist.

Inside Blackthorn House, the heavy mahogany gates remained bolted shut under twenty-four-hour armed surveillance.

Luca sat in the sunlit conservatory on the southern terrace, breathing deeply as the crisp morning air filled his lungs.

The sickening gray tint on his face had finally vanished, replaced by the natural color of renewed vitality.

Claire stood beside his wicker armchair, her fingers once again resting on his wrist to record his resting heart rate.

This time, however, not a single gun was pointed at her heart.

Every guard stationed in the hallway bowed their head with deep deference whenever she walked past.

“Seventy-two beats per minute,” Claire announced, stepping back with a satisfied nod.

“Your cardiac rhythm has fully synchronized, and the fluid retention in your ankles has cleared.”

“It seems my personal physician is far more effective than the entire European medical council,” Luca said, a rare warmth lighting his dark eyes.

“I am not your personal physician,” Claire corrected him with a subtle smirk.

“I am still technically the thirteenth private nurse who broke every single rule in this house.”

“You didn’t just break my rules, Claire,” Luca murmured, taking her hand and brushing his thumb across her knuckles.

“You rewrote them.”

Before Claire could respond, Matteo stepped briskly into the conservatory, holding a ringing satellite phone.

His expression was carved from solid stone, devoid of his usual calm composure.

“Boss, we have an emergency situation developing in the financial district,” Matteo reported, his tone tense.

Luca did not let go of Claire’s hand.

“Speak, Matteo.”

“The syndicate’s senior board of directors has called an unscheduled emergency council for noon today,” Matteo explained.

“Marco’s arrest triggered an immediate liquidity freeze across our offshore shipping accounts.”

“Elder Vance, the patriarch of the logistics council and father of the guard you neutralized in the tunnel, is leading the rebellion.”

“He is claiming that you are physically incapacitated, mentally compromised, and unfit to retain executive authority over the family assets.”

“They are planning to invoke Article Nine of the family charter to strip you of your title and seize Blackthorn House before sunset.”

Luca’s jaw set into an impenetrable line of hardened steel.

“Vance has been waiting fifteen years for an opportunity to claim the chairman’s seat,” Luca said, his voice dropping into a chilling register.

“He thinks I am lying in a bed with failing organs, unable to defend my legacy.”

“They believe you are weak because Dr. Sterling fed them false medical evaluations for six months,” Claire interjected, piecing together the political trap.

“If you do not attend that council, they will legally vote to declare you legally deceased or medically incompetent.”

“Then we will not keep the elders waiting,” Luca replied, rising from his chair with effortless power.

“Matteo, prepare my tailored suit and mobilize the primary security convoy.”

“We are going to teach the board what happens when you attempt a coup against a living king.”

“Wait,” Claire stopped him, stepping directly in front of his chest.

“You cannot simply walk into an armed boardroom with brute force.”

“If you respond with violence, federal prosecutors will use it to link you directly to Marco’s criminal charges.”

“You need to defeat them not with bullets, but with undeniable evidence of their own treason.”

Luca stared at her, mesmerized by her sharp intellect and strategic courage.

“Tell me your plan, Claire,” Luca commanded, listening to her every word.
