Chapter 4 - The Bloodline Betrayal and the Midnight Confrontation

The storm outside Blackthorn House had intensified, turning the rain into a torrential deluge that beat violently against the reinforced glass.

Inside the private master study on the third floor, a single brass lamp cast a warm, golden glow over the mahogany desk.

Luca Moretti sat in his high-backed chair, looking significantly stronger than he had twenty-four hours earlier, though his dark eyes burned with a cold, terrifying fury.

He stared down at the financial records and the confession transcripts spread across his desk.

Standing beside the desk, Claire observed the quiet, agonizing storm raging behind his stoic exterior.

Betrayal by an outsider was expected in the criminal underworld; it was a hazard of the trade.

Betrayal by blood—by the cousin he had raised from boyhood and trusted as his second-in-command—was a fatal wound to the soul.

“He sat at my dining table every Sunday,” Luca said, his voice barely above a whisper, carrying a chilling stillness that was more terrifying than a shout.

“He poured my wine, laughed at my jokes, and whispered condolences when my mother passed away.”

“And all the while, he was paying a pathetic, greedy doctor to slip neurotoxin into my morning tea.”

“Family ties mean nothing to a man consumed by ambition,” Claire said softly, stepping closer to the desk.

“When my own father was sick, his business partner tried to bleed his company dry while pretending to help him recover.”

“Greed strips away humanity long before it takes a life.”

Luca looked up, meeting her gaze.

The fierce, impenetrable wall he usually erected around himself seemed to crack slightly under the weight of her empathy.

“You speak with the wisdom of someone who has stared into the abyss, Claire,” Luca murmured, his voice softening.

“Most people in your position would be packing their bags and begging Matteo to smuggle them out of the estate.”

“Running away doesn’t fix anything,” Claire replied steadily.

“And besides, you put me under your absolute personal protection.”

“I intend to hold you to that promise until this threat is completely neutralized.”

A faint, genuine smile touched the corner of Luca’s mouth—a rare expression that transformed his dangerous face into something remarkably striking.

Before he could speak, a deafening explosion echoed from the outer perimeter of the estate.

The lights in the study flickered and died, plunging the room into total darkness save for the flashes of lightning outside.

Instantly, the emergency red alarm klaxons began to wail throughout Blackthorn House.

Luca stood up with blinding speed, pulling a heavy Beretta pistol from a hidden holster beneath his jacket.

“Breach on the western gate!” Matteo’s voice barked over the encrypted intercom speaker mounted on the wall.

“Mercenaries! Armed with automatic weapons and thermal breach charges!”

“They’re bypassing the outer courtyard!”

Luca didn’t hesitate for a single second.

He grabbed Claire by the wrist, pulling her behind the heavy steel-reinforced partition of his desk.

“Stay down,” Luca commanded, his voice brooking no argument.

“Marco didn’t wait for us to make the first move.”

“He sent an execution squad to finish the job tonight.”

Heavy footsteps thundered down the hallway outside the master suite, followed by the muffled sound of gunfire and shouting.

The battle for Blackthorn House had officially begun.
