Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Pantry and the Hidden Ledger

Midnight at Blackthorn House draped the sprawling estate in an oppressive shroud of heavy fog and relentless rain.

Claire sat at a mahogany desk in her private suite, surrounded by stacked ledgers, kitchen inventory logs, and Dr. Sterling’s confiscated prescription records.

The air in the room was cool, scented with the damp earth of the gardens outside.

Outside her reinforced wooden door, the steady footsteps of two armed guards patrolled the hallway, a constant reminder of Luca’s decree.

She leaned over the kitchen logs from the past six months, her eyes scanning the entries for any recurring patterns.

Every Tuesday and Friday, Luca’s personal meals included a specialized herbal tonic prepared exclusively by the estate's senior chef under Dr. Sterling’s direct supervision.

The ingredients seemed innocent enough on paper: ginseng, rare mountain roots, and imported organic honey.

However, when cross-referenced with Luca’s travel schedule, a chilling correlation emerged.

On the weeks Luca traveled to Geneva or New York, the tonic was omitted from his diet because the chef did not accompany him on short trips.

During those exact weeks, his blood pressure stabilized, his headaches vanished, and his energy returned to normal.

“It’s not the house,” Claire whispered to herself in the quiet room.

“It’s the tonic.”

A soft knock echoed at her door, interrupting her train of thought.

Claire stood up, keeping her hand near a heavy brass paperweight on the desk as a precaution.

“Who is it?” she asked.

“It’s Matteo,” came the low reply from the hallway.

Claire unlocked the door and pulled it open.

Matteo stood in the dim corridor, holding a sealed manila folder and a small, unlabeled glass vial secured in an evidence bag.

“May I come in?” Matteo asked, his eyes scanning the room to ensure safety.

“Of course,” Claire said, stepping aside.

Matteo walked in and placed the folder and the vial on the desk.

“We searched Dr. Sterling’s quarters and interrogated the kitchen staff,” Matteo said, his voice grim.

“What did you find?” Claire asked, leaning over the desk.

“We found a hidden compartment behind the medicine cabinet in Sterling’s private bathroom,” Matteo replied.

“Inside were several vials of a synthetic aconitine derivative—a powerful botanical neurotoxin that mimics natural cardiac failure and causes progressive paralysis when administered in micro-doses over months.”

Claire pointed at the glass vial on the desk.

“Is that a sample of what was in the hidden compartment?”

“Yes,” Matteo nodded.

“And what about the chef?”

“The chef broke down under questioning within five minutes,” Matteo said with a cold scowl.

“He confessed that Dr. Sterling paid him a substantial sum every month to ensure the special tonic was served exclusively to the boss, claiming it was an experimental longevity formula prescribed by elite European specialists.”

“The chef had no idea it was a poison; he thought it was just a secret health supplement.”

Claire crossed her arms, processing the information.

“Dr. Sterling is a physician, not a syndicate mastermind,” Claire noted astutely.

“A man like Sterling doesn’t have the motive or the overarching ambition to eliminate the head of the Moretti family on his own.”

“He was working for someone else.”

Matteo’s eyes narrowed sharply.

“That’s why I brought you this folder,” Matteo said, tapping the manila envelope.

“Before we locked him in the vault, Sterling cracked under the threat of permanent disappearance and named his handler.”

Claire opened the folder and pulled out a single sheet of financial transfer records, along with a photograph.

Her eyes widened as she looked at the name and face on the document.

It was Marco Moretti—Luca’s own cousin and the senior vice president of the Moretti shipping syndicate.

“Marco,” Claire breathed.

“If Luca dies without a direct heir, Marco inherits complete control of the empire and its multi-billion-dollar maritime assets,” Matteo explained, his jaw tight with suppressed rage.

“Marco has been quietly positioning his own loyalists across the board of directors for the past year.”

“If we present this evidence to Luca right now, it will shatter what’s left of his family trust.”

Claire looked down at the photograph of Marco Moretti, whose public persona was that of a charitable philanthropist and devoted family man.

“We don’t hide it,” Claire said firmly.

“Luca needs to know the truth before Marco makes his next move.”

“If Marco realizes the plot has been uncovered, he won't wait for the poison to finish its work—he’ll send an execution squad.”
