Chapter II: The Silent Scream

The heavy garnet-wood door swung open, and Arthur Vance stepped into the main foyer, his suit immaculate and his phone pressed tightly to his ear. His voice was low, carrying his trademark arrogance:
"I just got home. We'll continue tomorrow..."
He had no idea that the moment his foot crossed the threshold, grim reality was already waiting for him. From the brilliant, winding staircase, Elena rushed down like an arrow. The maid's face was completely drained of color, her wide eyes displaying utter terror. Forgetting all decorum and stripped of her usual fear of her employer's authority, she lunged forward, thrusting her hands into the air to stop Arthur dead in his tracks:
"Shut up, sir!"
Arthur froze. His thick eyebrows knitted together, and he lowered his phone, his eyes flashing with fury at her sheer insolence:
"What?"
"I said shut up, sir, please!" Elena’s voice was choked, cold tears streaming down her cheeks. She pressed a finger to her lips, making a desperate gesture. "Please, don't make a sound."
The tycoon scoffed, assuming the maid had simply lost her mind under the stress of the job:
"Have you lost your mind?"
Without answering, Elena slowly raised her trembling arm, her index finger pointing directly toward the mezzanine balcony—the highest point of the grand foyer. Her voice was as faint as a whisper:
"Up there..."
Arthur looked up. And instantly, the blood in his veins turned to ice.

Standing on the narrow marble ledge just past the wrought-iron railing of the balcony was the little girl. Lily. She was dressed in a pure white nightgown, her blonde hair falling loosely over her shoulders. Her small, pale bare feet hung more than halfway over the edge, suspended over the yawning abyss of the living room. Her eyes were wide open but completely vacant, staring blankly into nothingness.
The phone slipped from Arthur’s hand, shattering upon the floor. His breath caught, his chest heaving in a state of primal terror he had never experienced before.
