Chapter IV: Ashes in the Cold Wind

That night, the city's suburban hospital was bathed in the harsh glare of white neon lights and the monotonous ticking of a heart rate monitor. Arthur Vance lay on the hospital bed, his head heavily bandaged, his face hollow and gray like cold ash. The plunge from the balcony to save Lily had left the tycoon with a severe traumatic brain injury. Wealth, power, and the trillion-dollar figures on the stock market could do nothing to buy a single spark of vitality for the fallen billionaire.
Beside the bed, Lily was fully awake. Her eyes were no longer vacant and soulless like they were during that horrific night of sleepwalking; instead, they were filled with tears of fright. The little girl clutched her father's rough, cold hand. Elena stood silently in the corner of the room, looking at the father and daughter with a mixture of profound pity.
Suddenly, Arthur's fingers twitched. He opened his eyes, but his gaze lacked the arrogance and sharpness of his former self. He stared blankly at the ceiling before slowly turning his head toward Lily. His voice was faint and broken, like dry leaves scraping together:
"Lily... do you... see Mommy?"
The child shook her head, sobbing, "I don't see her... Mommy isn't here, Daddy. I'm sorry..."
Arthur shook his head slightly, a bitter smile gracing his bloodied lips. He knew Evelyn was no longer there because she had successfully collected her greatest debt: his pride and his soul. That fall had not only broken Arthur's body, but it had shattered the deceptive facade he had spent half his life constructing.
He turned his gaze toward Elena, his eyes pleading:
"Elena... take Lily away from that house. Never... go back. My lawyer... he will hand over the will... I've left everything to Lily, under your guardianship... Raise her... far away from the darkness of the Vance family..."

Elena stepped forward, placing her warm hand over Arthur's, and nodded in silence. She knew this was not merely an employer's final words, but a sin-ridden soul begging for redemption before stepping through the gates of the afterlife.
At dawn, before the first ray of the new day could pierce the thick fog blanketing the city, the line on the electrocardiogram flattened, accompanied by a long, cold beep. Arthur Vance drew his final breath, carrying the dark secrets of his life down into the deep grave.
