Chapter III: The Dance on the Edge of Life and Death

The space plunged into a deathly silence, filled only by the thumping hearts of the two adults below. Trembling, Arthur made a move toward the first step of the stairs, but Elena violently grabbed his arm, holding him back.
"Don't, sir!" Elena whispered fiercely, her breath ragged against his ear. "The doctor's notes said she is in a state of deep sleepwalking mixed with severe hallucinations. If you call out or startle her right now, her panic reflex will cause her to lose her balance and plunge instantly!"
Arthur broke out into a cold sweat, stammering, "But... but do we just stand here and watch? She’s going to fall!"
Right then, from the dark hallway behind Lily on the second floor, a sudden blast of icy air swept out, dimming the light from the crystal chandelier. The lights in the house began to flicker erratically. Lily was no longer still. She slowly tilted her head to one side, a naive, vacant smile appearing on her angelic but pale face.
"Mommy..." Lily’s innocent voice echoed through the vast foyer, sounding chillingly detached. "Have you come to take me with you?"
Arthur's eyes widened in horror. He saw it—from the murky darkness of the upper corridor, the slender figure of a woman was gradually taking shape. She was wearing the very evening gown Evelyn had worn the night she disappeared. The phantom's face was blurred, but her blood-red eyes, filled with resentment, looked straight down at Arthur.
The ghost extended a gray, withered hand, beckoning the child. As if hypnotized, Lily lifted one foot, preparing to take a long step into the empty air ahead.
"Evelyn! Don't! Please!" Arthur could no longer contain himself. He collapsed onto the marble floor, screaming in tears. The pride of a millionaire completely shattered. He realized that the wife he had ruthlessly harmed to claim her entire inheritance had returned. She didn't want his life; she wanted to take the only thing he truly cared about in this world—his poor daughter.
Lily stepped into the void. Her tiny body tumbled forward from a height of over thirty feet.
"NOOOOO!"
Arthur sprinted toward the base of the stairs, his arms outstretched in absolute desperation. Elena screamed, shutting her eyes tight.
A dull, heavy thud echoed.
But it wasn't the sound of a body impacting the stone floor. When Elena opened her eyes, she was astonished to see that Arthur had managed to dive underneath, using his own body to cushion Lily's fall. The immense impact sent him reeling backward, his head striking the edge of a glass coffee table, sending a stream of fresh blood down his face. Yet, his arms remained tightly wrapped around his daughter, forming an unbreakable cocoon of protection.
Startled awake by the impact, Lily looked up at her father’s blood-stained face and burst into tears: "Daddy... I'm scared..."

Arthur smiled weakly. He felt a cold breeze brush past him before dissipating through the open window into the night. The phantom had left; perhaps his remorse and the price paid in blood had temporarily appeased her wrath. He held his daughter close, whispering with his fading breath, "It's okay, my princess... Daddy will never hide you away again..."
Outside, the storm finally unleashed its fury, washing away the stains of the past and opening a painful but redemptive final chapter for the Vance family.
