Chapter 11 - The Ring in the Rain: Reclaiming the Night We Lost

The small, dark velvet box rested in Chase’s palm like a promise carved in stone.

The diamond inside caught the ambient penthouse light, casting tiny, brilliant prisms across the modern artwork hanging on the study wall.

For a moment, the world outside—the corporate war, the federal investigations, the threat of Marcus Vance—vanished completely, leaving only the steady hum of the ventilation system and the sound of my own ragged breathing.

“Chase…” I whispered, my voice trembling as I stared down at the ring.

“We are sitting in the middle of a federal corporate war. Your primary rival is trying to tear your empire down to the studs, and I’m five months pregnant, hiding in your fortress. This… this isn’t the time.”

“There is no better time,” Chase interrupted gently, his dark eyes burning with an intense, unwavering devotion that made my knees weak.

“When I met you on that rooftop six months ago, I didn't know your last name, I didn't know what you did for a living, and I didn't care. All I knew was that for two hours, I forgot every billionaire problem, every hostile takeover, and every corporate enemy trying to sink my ships. You made me feel human, Claire. And when you vanished the next morning, I realized I had let the only real thing I’d ever found slip through my fingers.”

He slid the velvet box open a fraction further, the platinum band gleaming softly against the black lining.

“I spent five months tearing this city apart looking for you. Not to secure an heir, not to win a game, but because my life had stopped the morning you left,” Chase continued, his voice dropping into a low, husky whisper.

“I am not asking you to marry me because it’s a strategic alliance. I am asking you because I love you, Claire. And I want to spend the rest of my life making sure you never have to run from anything ever again.”

Tears spilled over my lower lashes, tracking down my cheeks, but a soft, watery laugh escaped my lips.

“You’re insane, Chase Rowe,” I choked out, shaking my head.

“Completely, hopelessly insane.”

“Does that mean yes?” he asked, a rare, breathtaking smile breaking through his serious exterior.

I reached out, taking his hand, and gently guided the ring onto my left ring finger.

It fit as if it had been measured by a jeweler who had known my hand by heart.

“Yes,” I whispered, leaning forward to press my lips against his.

“Yes, Chase. I’ll marry you.”

The kiss was deep, desperate, and filled with all the unspoken fears and fierce hopes we had carried through the dark.

When we finally pulled apart, resting our foreheads together, the heavy oak door of the study swung open abruptly.

Julian stood in the doorway, holding a thick leather tablet, looking as if he had just walked in on an alien invasion.

“Mr. Rowe, Miss Evans,” Julian cleared his throat awkwardly, refusing to look down at our hands.

“I apologize for interrupting what appears to be a deeply emotional moment, but federal regulators just pulled the trigger on the offshore accounts.”

Chase didn't flinch, though his arm remained firmly wrapped around my waist.

“Speak, Julian,” Chase commanded calmly.

“Vance’s forty million dollar transfer was flagged under the Patriot Act for unregistered international routing,” Julian announced, a triumphant smirk breaking across his sharp features.

“The DOJ just issued a freeze order on every single domestic account tied to Vance Industries. His liquidity is gone, Chase. He cannot meet his margin calls for the hostile takeover. The board is in full panic mode.”

A cold, satisfied smile touched Chase’s lips.

“Checkmate,” Chase murmured.
