Chapter 4 - The First Night Under the Same Roof: Unspoken Truths and a Midnight Confession

The master suite of Chase’s Upper East Side townhouse was larger than my entire Brooklyn apartment, featuring floor-to-ceiling windows, minimalist modern furniture, and a king-sized bed draped in crisp white linens.
After a long, hot shower that washed away the stale smell of Meridian Tower’s cleaning supplies and the lingering panic of the parking garage ambush, I slipped into one of Chase’s oversized cotton shirts that hung down to my knees.
Standing in front of the massive bathroom mirror, I stared at my reflection.
My dark hair was damp, falling in loose waves around my shoulders, and my stomach pressed visibly against the soft fabric of the shirt.
Five months pregnant.
Halfway to holding a child whose father was one of the most powerful, hunted men in New York City.
A soft knock echoed from the bathroom door, followed by Chase’s voice.
“Claire? Are you decent?”
“Come in,” I called out quietly.
Chase pushed the door open, carrying a silver tray laden with grilled salmon, steamed vegetables, and a tall glass of sparkling water with lemon.
He stopped when he saw me standing by the sink, his dark eyes sweeping over me with a quiet intensity that made my breath catch.
“You look tired,” he said gently, setting the tray down on a small marble table near the window.
“I am tired,” I admitted, walking out of the bathroom and sitting down on the edge of the sprawling bed.
“My entire world flipped upside down in less than twelve hours. My apartment building was sold, I found out I’m being hunted by my baby’s billionaire father and his corporate enemies, and now I’m eating dinner in a penthouse fortress that costs more than my entire lifetime earnings.”
Chase pulled up a chair, sitting down directly across from me, resting his elbows on his knees.
“You’re safe here, Claire,” he repeated, his voice steady and low.
“I know you keep saying that,” I replied, looking straight into his eyes.
“But how can you guarantee my safety when Marcus Vance was literally waiting for you in the basement of your own office building? You have a target on your back, Chase. And now, by extension, so do I and this baby.”
Chase didn't look away.
He didn't offer empty platitudes or corporate denials.
Instead, he reached out, taking my hand between both of his, his thumb gently stroking my knuckles.
“Marcus Vance is playing a dangerous game,” Chase said, his tone turning ice-cold.
“For two years, he’s been trying to force a hostile merger of my tech assets. When I refused, he started digging into my personal life, looking for leverage. He doesn't know about you yet, Claire. But the moment he finds out you’re carrying my child, he will try to use you as a pawn.”
My stomach clenched uncomfortably.
“Then why bring me here?” I whispered, my voice trembling.
“Why not send me somewhere else? Somewhere anonymous, far away from New York, where Marcus Vance will never find me?”
Chase squeezed my hand tighter, his dark eyes burning with absolute determination.
“Because I spent five months searching every corner of this country for you, Claire,” he said fiercely.
“Every lead that turned out to be a dead end, every sleepless night wondering if you were okay, every second of regret for not getting your last name that night on the rooftop—it broke me. I am not letting you out of my sight again. Not for your safety, not for anyone.”
The raw, unfiltered honesty in his voice knocked the wind right out of my lungs.
For months, I had convinced myself that I was just a convenient mistake to him—a waitress he had spent a rainy evening talking to before returning to his billion-dollar empire.
Hearing him say those words proved I had been wrong about everything.
“You really looked for me?” I asked softly, the question slipping out before I could stop it.
Chase let out a low, humorless laugh, shaking his head.
“I hired private investigators in twelve states, Claire. I checked flight manifests, hospital intake records, and utility bills under every alias I could think of. I was losing my mind.”
He reached up, his hand gently cupping my cheek, his thumb brushing away a stray tear I hadn't realized was falling.

“Eat your dinner,” he whispered, his voice softening.
“And then I want you to sleep. Tomorrow, we start figuring out how to dismantle Marcus Vance once and for all.”
