Chapter 12 - The Fall of Marcus Vance: Watching an Empire Crumble from a Glass Tower

By dawn, the financial news networks were in absolute frenzy.
‘VANCE INDUSTRIES HALTS TRADING AMID FEDERAL PROBE,’ screamed the bold red banner across Bloomberg and CNBC.
‘BILLIONAIRE MARCUS VANCE UNDER CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION FOR ILLICIT OFFSHORE TRANSFERS.’
Sitting on the plush velvet sofa in the grand study with a steaming mug of tea in my hands, I watched the morning broadcast unfold on the wall-mounted television screen.
Footage of Marcus Vance stepping out of his Madison Avenue penthouse surrounded by a pack of aggressive reporters played in an endless loop.
His silver hair was slightly disheveled, his expensive cashmere overcoat pulled tight around him as he pushed his way past microphones and cameras, his face twisted into a mask of humiliated rage.
“He’s finished,” Julian said, walking into the study holding a fresh cup of coffee and looking entirely pleased with himself.
“Without liquidity to cover his short positions, Vance’s board of directors is already drafting a vote of no confidence. By the time the markets open on Monday, he’ll be ousted from his own company.”
I set my mug down on the glass coffee table, looking over at Chase, who was standing by the window reviewing digital legal briefs on his tablet.
“Does he know it was a trap?” I asked quietly.
“He knows now,” Chase replied without looking up, a faint, cold smirk playing on his lips.
“Julian’s team dropped an anonymous memo to Vance’s chief financial officer detailing how the bait was laid. He knows I outplayed him at his own game.”
“And what about us?” I asked, standing up and walking over to stand beside him.
“Does this mean we can finally leave the fortress?”
Chase turned his head, locking his dark eyes onto mine.
He reached out, his hand resting gently over my five-month baby bump, feeling a soft kick from the little girl growing inside.
“It means,” Chase whispered softly, “that the world outside is finally safe for you. No more hiding, no more aliases, no more cleaning carts in Meridian Tower.”
He wrapped his other arm around my shoulders, pulling me close against his chest.
“Tomorrow, we’re packing a bag and flying to my estate in the Hamptons. You, me, and the baby. Far away from corporate boardrooms and federal subpoenas.”
A profound wave of relief washed over me.

The nightmare was over.
The ghost I had tried so desperately to outrun had turned out to be the man who would build an empire just to keep me safe.
