Chapter 5 - The Morning After: A Knock at the Door and the Arrival of an Unexpected Visitor

Morning sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the master suite, painting geometric patterns across the hardwood floor.
I woke up alone in the massive king-sized bed, the indentation on the other side indicating that Chase had been up for hours.
A fresh set of clothes—simple, high-end cashmere loungewear and comfortable flats—was neatly folded on the armchair near the dressing room, accompanied by a handwritten note in sharp, elegant handwriting:
‘Breakfast is waiting downstairs whenever you’re ready. Don't leave the suite without security. — C.’
I dressed slowly, running my hands over my stomach, feeling a gentle flutter from the baby as if greeting the new day.
Despite the terrifying events of the previous night, waking up in this quiet, secure sanctuary felt surreal.
As I stepped out of the master suite into the sunlit hallway overlooking the grand foyer below, the sharp, urgent chime of the front intercom echoed through the townhouse.
I froze, stepping back into the shadows of the corridor.
Moments later, Mrs. Gable’s voice drifted up from the lower level, sounding unusually tense.
“Sir, you cannot be here without an appointment. Mr. Rowe is currently unavailable.”
“Save the corporate pleasantries, Mrs. Gable,” a smooth, sharp voice cut through the foyer like a knife.
“Tell Chase his oldest friend and legal counsel is here. And judging by the armored vehicles parked outside, he’s going to want to hear what I just pulled from federal court filings this morning.”
Legal counsel?
I crept closer to the glass railing, peering down into the grand foyer below.
Standing near the double front doors was a tall, sharp-featured man in a bespoke gray suit, holding a leather briefcase and looking utterly unfazed by the two armed security guards blocking his path.
A moment later, a door on the far side of the ground floor opened, and Chase stepped out into the hallway, dressed in a dark button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows.
His face was an unreadable mask of cold steel.
“Julian,” Chase said, his voice echoing up to the second-floor gallery.
“You’ve grown careless with your trespassing, counselor.”
Julian let out a dry, knowing smirk, stepping past the guards as Chase motioned for them to stand down.
“I didn't come here to trespass, Chase,” Julian said, pulling a thick manila folder from his briefcase.
“I came here because Marcus Vance just filed an emergency injunction with the SEC, freezing all of your primary tech assets under suspicion of fraudulent shell companies.”
Chase didn't flinch.
“That was expected. My legal team is already contesting it.”
“That’s not the worst of it, Chase,” Julian interrupted, his voice dropping as he stepped closer to his friend.
“Vance didn't just file an SEC injunction. He filed a petition for a federal audit of your personal residences, private accounts, and domestic associates. He’s looking for a vulnerability, Chase. And if his investigators find out you’re hiding an unregistered, pregnant woman in your Upper East Side penthouse… your entire empire goes up in flames.”

Up on the second-floor landing, my breath caught in my throat.
My worst nightmare had just come true.
