Chapter 13 - The Inheritance of Shadows

The secure visiting room of the federal holding facility smelled strongly of industrial disinfectant and stale institutional coffee. Behind the thick, reinforced glass partition, Victoria Vance sat in a coarse orange jumpsuit, her hair pulled back into a messy, unstyled ponytail, her face stripped of every expensive cosmetic that had once defined her high-society persona. The transformation from an untouchable queen of the elite social circuit to a disgraced inmate awaiting trial had broken something fundamental inside her psyche. She picked up the heavy plastic telephone receiver with trembling fingers, her eyes darting across the room until they locked onto the solitary figure sitting on the other side of the glass. Julian Vance picked up his matching receiver with calm, deliberate slowness, a faint, detached smile playing at the corners of his mouth as he observed his former sister-in-law through the smudged glass. “You look terrible, Victoria,” Julian said smoothly, his voice carrying clearly through the secure intercom speaker. “The orange really doesn't match your complexion—though I suppose minimalism has always been your aesthetic preference, even if you preferred stealing other people's money to pay for it.” Victoria’s face twisted into an ugly, venomous sneer, her fingernails scratching aggressively against the plastic frame of the partition. “You set me up, Julian!” Victoria shrieked, her voice muffled slightly by the glass but dripping with pure, unadulterated hatred. “You and that miserable, scheming nanny! You engineered the whole thing from your dark little server room just to oust me from the trust and take complete control of Marcus’s empire!”

Julian let out a quiet, melodic chuckle, shaking his head slowly as if humoring an unhinged child throwing a tantrum in a grocery store. “We didn't set you up, Victoria. We simply stopped cleaning up your mess and let your own staggering arrogance do the rest,” Julian replied, his tone dropping into a cool, dangerous register. “You spent three years trying to turn Marcus into an isolated puppet, and the moment a real crisis hit, your first instinct was to commit murder just to cover your tracks. You thought everyone around you was an expendable pawn in your grand social-climbing game. But chess pieces don't bleed, Victoria—people do.” Victoria slammed her palm against the glass partition, her eyes bulging with fury as she leaned forward until her nose was nearly touching the transparent barrier. “Marcus will never forgive you for manipulating this! He’s weak, he’s sentimental, and the moment I’m out—” She stopped abruptly as Julian slowly raised his left hand, holding up a certified legal document pressed flat against the glass for her to read. Victoria’s eyes scanned the bold lettering across the top of the page, and the color drained completely from her face, leaving her skin a ghastly, chalky white. It was a formal court order freezing every single remaining trust fund, offshore asset, and inheritance claim linked to her maiden name, permanently cutting off any financial lifeline she hoped to use for her defense attorneys. “There is no out, Victoria,” Julian whispered softly into the microphone, his eyes flashing with absolute, unyielding finality. “Your trial starts next month, and when the judge hands down the maximum sentence, you’ll spend the rest of your natural life looking at concrete walls instead of gold-plated mirrors. Enjoy your new home.” Julian hung the receiver up with a sharp click, turned on his heel, and walked out of the visitation room without looking back once, leaving Victoria screaming silently into the glass as the guards stepped forward to drag her back to her cell.
