Chapter 5 - The First Strike in the Dark

The vibration of the burner phone on the cheap wooden kitchen table shattered the quiet of Elena’s apartment like a gunshot. She dropped the dish towel she was holding and snatched the device off the surface, pressing the accept button without hesitation. Julian’s voice came through instantly, stripped of all pleasantries, carrying a cold, urgent intensity that signaled the moment of truth had finally arrived. “She broke,” Julian stated flatly, his words cutting through the air like a scalpel. “Marcus confronted her with the backup footage I slipped onto his desk this morning. Victoria tried to lie her way out of it, claimed the file was a deepfake fabricated by me to undermine her, but Marcus isn't as stupid as she thinks when his son’s safety is thrown into the equation. He didn't throw her out yet—she’s too embedded in the household optics for an immediate public scandal—but he locked her out of the corporate accounts, froze her personal credit cards, and placed her under virtual house arrest within the estate.” Elena’s heart hammered against her ribs, a fierce wave of vindication washing over her, though she kept her voice entirely steady. “What is our next move? If she’s trapped inside the mansion, she’s going to become desperate, and a desperate predator strikes twice as hard.” Julian let out a low, approving hum on the other end of the line, clearly impressed by Elena’s rapid tactical thinking. “Exactly. Victoria is already planning her counter-attack. She knows she can't convince Marcus anymore, so she’s going to try to discredit me and shift the blame entirely onto the corporate management structure, claiming an internal conspiracy to oust her from the family trust. To do that, she needs access to the physical archives in the corporate basement. That’s where you come in, Elena.” Elena frowned, gripping the edges of the table as she leaned closer to the phone. “Me? How am I supposed to get into the Vance corporate headquarters? I’m a disgraced former nanny with a canceled pass.”
