Chapter 3 - The Shadow of the Past

The morning sun filtered through the dusty venetian blinds of a small, cramped apartment on the outskirts of the city, casting long, fractured shadows across the worn linoleum floor. Elena sat at a wobbly wooden kitchen table, a steaming mug of cheap instant coffee between her hands, though she hadn't taken a single sip since pouring it twenty minutes ago. Her cheek still throbbed with a dull, persistent ache where Marcus’s ring had clipped her skin during the slap, a physical mark that served as a constant reminder of how brutally fast a person’s dignity could be stripped away by wealth and power. Yet, physical pain was nothing compared to the hollow ache in her chest when she thought of little Leo—the toddler who had looked at her with such absolute trust before being dragged back into a fortress of lies with a monster masquerading as a stepmother. Her phone, resting face-up on the table, suddenly buzzed with a sharp, vibrating hum that made her jump, displaying an unknown, highly encrypted caller ID from downtown Hanoi. Hesitating for only a fraction of a second, Elena swiped the screen and pressed the phone to her ear, her voice tight and guarded as she spoke. “Hello? Who is this?” A deep, controlled voice answered immediately, carrying the crisp, unmistakable cadence of a man accustomed to command and absolute precision. “Miss Elena. My name is Julian Vance. I am Marcus’s younger brother, though I suspect you already know that from the family registry.” Elena’s breath caught in her throat, her hand tightening around the plastic phone casing until her knuckles turned white as she braced herself for another wave of hostility or a legal threat from the Vance family lawyers. “If you are calling to threaten me, or to tell me to keep my silence about what happened at the pool, you are wasting your time,” Elena said, her voice shaking slightly with residual adrenaline. “I didn't do anything wrong, and I won't be intimidated.” A quiet, low chuckle came through the speaker, devoid of malice, carrying a strange, reassuring warmth. “Relax, Miss Elena. I am not calling to threaten you. In fact, I am calling to apologize on behalf of my family for the sheer brutality of my brother’s stupidity last night. Furthermore, I am calling to offer you an alliance.” Elena frowned, confusion warring with deep skepticism as she shifted in her seat. “An alliance? Mr. Vance, your brother threw me out of his house and branded me a criminal in front of all his elite friends.”

“My brother is a fool who has allowed a venomous viper to wrap herself around his judgment,” Julian replied, his tone hardening with cold certainty. “I have seen the unedited security footage from the pool deck, Elena. I know exactly what Victoria did, and I know precisely how she manipulated Marcus into executing her dirty work. But knowing the truth and exposing a master manipulator are two entirely different games. Victoria has spent years building a network of loyalists within the corporation and the estate, and if we simply march up to Marcus with the raw video file right now, she will twist it, claim it was doctored by my department, and turn my brother even further against us. We need a strategy. We need to let her make a fatal mistake that even her silver tongue cannot talk her out of.” Elena listened intently, the fog of shock clearing from her mind as the practical reality of her situation set in; she wanted justice for Leo, and she wanted Victoria to pay for every single lie, but she knew she couldn't fight a multi-billion-dollar empire alone without a powerful insider guiding her steps. “What do you want me to do?” Elena asked, her voice dropping all pretense of hesitation, replaced by a cold, hardened determination. “For now, you do nothing publicly,” Julian instructed smoothly. “Rest, heal your face, and let the Vance household believe they have won an absolute, uncontested victory. Victoria is arrogant; when she believes her enemies are completely vanquished, she always becomes careless, and that carelessness will create the precise crack we need to shatter her entire facade. I have arranged for a private courier to drop an envelope at your apartment within the hour—it contains financial compensation for your unjust termination, which I expect you to accept without question as operational capital, along with a secure burner phone. Use only that phone to contact me when the time is right.” Before Elena could argue about taking Vance money, Julian ended the call with a soft click, leaving her staring at the dead screen in stunned silence. True to his word, exactly forty-eight minutes later, a sharp knock sounded at her apartment door, and when she opened it, an empty hallway greeted her with a plain brown manila envelope resting neatly on the welcome mat. She brought it inside, opened the flap, and found a stack of cash wrapped in a secure bank band alongside a sleek, unbranded smartphone with a single pre-saved contact labeled simply: J. As she picked up the burner phone, the screen lit up with a notification of a newly arrived text message: The game has begun, Elena. Welcome to the board.
