Chapter 7 - The Desperate Pawn

Inside the suffocating silence of the Vance mansion’s master suite, Victoria paced across the imported Persian rugs like a caged panther, her phone displaying a persistent, unforgiving error screen every time she attempted to authorize a wire transfer. Her hair was slightly disheveled, her designer dress unzipped slightly at the back due to her inability to have her personal stylist admitted through the heavy security gates Marcus had personally reinforced. The digital smart-locks on the doors were completely overridden from Julian’s downtown terminal, locking her inside the suite as if she were a common criminal awaiting trial. A sharp, muffled knock at the heavy oak door startled her, followed by the discrete rattling of the brass handle as a timid voice whispered through the crack. “Mrs. Vance? Madam, are you in there?” Victoria rushed to the door, pressing her mouth against the narrow opening with frantic urgency. “Robert? Is that you? Thank God! Where have you been? Why didn’t you intercept the security logs like I ordered?” A muffled, nervous sigh came from the hallway where Robert, the head of household security who had long served as Victoria’s personal fixer, stood sweating in his tailored uniform. “Madam, I couldn't do anything! Mr. Julian locked down the entire internal network from headquarters at midnight, and Mr. Marcus has been sequestered in his study all morning reviewing paper audits with the board accountants. They are dismantling your authority piece by piece!” Victoria’s fingernails dug violently into the wooden door frame, her breath coming in hot, shallow gasps as her mind raced to find a lifeline before Marcus finished reviewing the financial ledgers that would expose her multi-year embezzlement scheme.

“Listen to me very carefully, Robert,” Victoria hissed, her voice dropping into a venomous, commanding whisper that commanded absolute obedience. “If Marcus sees those ledgers, we are both finished. He will throw me out on the street with nothing, and he will strip you of your pension and send you to prison for the forged security reports. You need to get down to the corporate headquarters downtown, break into the sub-basement physical archive room, and pull the original hard copies of the 2024 asset transfers before Julian’s department flags them.” Robert hesitated, his voice trembling with terror at the prospect of defying Marcus and going head-to-head with Julian’s notoriously ruthless IT division. “Downtown? Madam, the security at the main tower is impenetrable since Mr. Julian took over complete operational control! They’ll catch me before I even reach the elevator bank!” Victoria’s eyes flashed with pure malice as she leaned harder against the door, knowing she had to push her pawn over the edge of the cliff. “They won't catch you if you use the old maintenance service tunnel beneath the parking structure—the one my father helped install years ago before the digital upgrades,” Victoria lied smoothly, inventing a passage that she hoped still existed, driving her subordinate forward solely as a human shield to buy herself time. “Go now, Robert. Bring me those files, and I promise you a hundred thousand dollars wired offshore before the sun sets. Fail me, and you’ll share my grave.” Silence stretched from the hallway for a agonizing thirty seconds before Robert’s heavy, reluctant footsteps shuffled away down the carpeted corridor, signaling that the trap was officially baited and the pawn had begun his march toward the slaughterhouse.
