Chapter 9 - The Crumbling Foundation

Up in the executive suite on the fortieth floor, Marcus Vance stared down at his private tablet with an expression of cold, petrified disbelief. The video feed streamed directly from the sub-basement, broadcasting every desperate second of Robert’s failed theft, synchronized perfectly with the audio transcript of Victoria ordering the break-in over the house intercom earlier that morning. The heavy mahogany desk in front of him was littered with open financial folders, highlighting millions of dollars in unauthorized asset transfers funneled over the past two years into offshore accounts registered under shell corporations managed by Victoria’s maiden name. The illusion of a devoted, innocent wife had completely shattered, replaced by the ugly, undeniable reality of a calculated parasite who had not only embezzled his fortune but had deliberately attempted to murder his infant son just to eliminate a witness to her administrative negligence. Marcus’s chest heaved with ragged, painful breaths, his vision blurring slightly as the sheer weight of his own monumental stupidity crushed down upon his shoulders. He had banished an innocent young woman who had risked her life to save his child, he had struck her across the face in a fit of blind rage, and he had groveled at the feet of the very monster who was slowly bleeding his empire dry from the inside out. Without uttering a single word, Marcus stood up so violently that his heavy leather executive chair tipped backward and crashed loudly against the oak-paneled wall. He grabbed his tailored suit jacket from the back of the sofa, shoved his tablet into his pocket with trembling hands, and strode out of his office with a terrifying, purposeful stride that made his remaining deputies scatter out of his path in sheer terror.
The private elevator plunged downward at maximum speed toward the underground parking garage, but Marcus bypassed his car entirely, instead demanding his driver take him straight back to the Vance estate without a moment’s delay. During the twenty-minute drive through the congested downtown traffic, Marcus sat in absolute silence in the back of the limousine, his jaw locked so tightly that his teeth ached, his mind replaying the sound of Elena’s voice begging for mercy on the night of the gala. When the limousine finally screeched to a halt before the wrought-iron gates of the estate, the guards didn't even wait for a command before swinging the heavy barriers wide open, recognizing the volatile aura of absolute fury radiating from their employer. Marcus stepped out into the courtyard, walking past the massive swimming pool where the underwater spotlights cast their eerie blue glow across the marble tiles, reminding him of the exact spot where his son’s life had been gambled away by the woman he trusted most. He strode through the grand French doors of the mansion, ignoring the trembling butler who stepped aside in terror, and marched straight up the sweeping mahogany staircase toward the master suite. The digital smart-lock on the double doors of the master bedroom flashed red as Marcus swiped his master administrator card, the heavy doors unlatching with a sharp click and swinging open to reveal Victoria standing by the vanity, frantically trying to pack her jewelry into a leather case. She whipped around at the sound of the door opening, a desperate, manipulative smile plastered across her face, but the frozen, dead look in Marcus’s eyes instantly wiped the smile from her lips, leaving her standing in absolute terror as the final chapter of her reign of deceit came crashing down around her.
